It's a bit of a bear, but I was able to draw and shoot a bow today at 45#. It was only 15yds, and I was only capable of a 3-4" grouping, but it's a step. This was the first time since early July I was actually able to draw and shoot a bow. The draw looks horrid, and there is pain, but the arrows flew true, and it's a step, in the right direction, and a GIANT LEAP since I completely lost use of my arm 7 weeks ago and had to have surgery!!! I'm grinning and you couldn't smack this grin off my face with a baseball bat right now!!! :D
Great to hear but if your feeling pain I wouldn't do to much. Just be careful. Recovery takes time. Good luck!
Christine, It would be difficult to re-break my neck shooting a bow, but I'll keep it in mind.... :D The muscles are slowly coming back, and 3 - 4 weeks ago, I couldn't even hold a bow...So it's a great leap in the right direction, yet it's also a big challenge to do more than 10 shots. Gonna have to crawl before I walk, and walk before I run...so to speak, and I'm starting the "crawl" now.
Your form would be pretty bad to rebreak your neck. What I mean is don't put too much stress on your weakened muscles trying to get back into shooting. I never broke my neck but still tore up my shoulder by trying to pull too much weight. It sounds like you are taking it slow.... but I'm a woman and required by gender to worry about these things. :D :D
Duly noted. :D I'd been working up to it slowly, I have "thera-bands" from physical therapy, started using it just single layered, then up to double layered, and worked up to this. Last week, I was able to draw my wife's little bow which is about 42#, but couldn't get it into a position to shoot, in part because of the weakness in the left shoulder, and the short DL. But I was drawing it, then slowly letting it down. Working up to this. The bow is a Bowtech Tomkat that I picked up for my nephew who was only 5'10", and now he's 6'2" and it's too short, and he lost interest pretty quick. I was gonna sell it, but I think I may keep it around for a little while... One day at a time, and patience truly is a virtue, and one I wasn't blessed with nearly enough of....:D
Glad to read this Doug! 45# will kill 'em...take your time, and who knows...whenever that next kill shot comes - it will be sweet!
Thats great go easy. I just got permission to shoot again, I had a heart attack in late august and just got go ahead today so i'm breaking the bow out this weekend WoooHoo
Congrats man. Work hard but dont over do it. You have the right mind set just dont be too stubborn. Cant wait till that first deer you kill after this whole situation. That will be a sweet moment.
Sorry to hear you broke your neck! Thats craziness!! Praise God you survived nevermind drawing your bow 2 months later! Very good news! Hope you get out there this year!
