Well I went and pulled my last drumlog sets today and reassigned them to some deer sets. It's amazing to see what other critters use these drum logs too...here's a varitey of different critters using them this spring... A good ole New York panther... And the last Ruffy shots for this year.. Hope to have as much luck with the deer this summer.. Take care Dave
Hey Dave, Great pics. How do you identify a spot that the birds are drumming on? I was sitting in my bear baiting stand and 2 nights in a row about 30 yards away, I can hear these Spruce Grouse flying from the ground to the trees. From where I'm at I can see a Log that they keep flying to. It seems like they land on it, stand there for a minute or 2 and take off. I think it's more than one bird and they come back several times a night. Could that be a spot they are drumming?
Kyle - I'm not sure if Spruce grouse drum like Ruffed grouse do, we don't have them around here. Did you actually hear them drum at all? I suspect if they do they would use a log just like Ruffys do. Next time your out there - go and look at the log you've seen them at. If you see a bunch of grouse poop there chances are it's his drum log. I can't think of why they would be flying to that log only for a couple minutes and then taking off again. I know the Ruffed grouse will sit there for hours drumming every few minutes.
Great pics! Until trailcams I never new there was such a thing as a drum log. It really makes for some spectacular pictures. Blessings......Pastorjim
Im going back out Friday. I'll take a look at it. Im not sure if they drum or not. I just figured if the ruffys do it they would too. Maybe not though.
