Do any of you guys consistently envision a unique scenario where you kill a big old buck? For the past couple of years I keep thinking about hunting high on a hillside, right on a shelf where the terrain drops off sharply to one side. The day is cold and overcast and for some reason I hear something slightly stirring, not much, but I know it is "him". I eventually catch the form of a monster buck skulking along the side of that steep hill, no one else around except for him and I. As he stops I put one of my feathered arrows into the boiler room and he bolts, then falls down the hill crashing to the bottom. Out in the middle of nowhere I feel proud to pull that big old buck back up that hill. I know it sounds kind of cheesy but that thought keeps popping up into my head. I just know it is going to happen here soon. (in my hunting life soon=within 5 years...hahaha).

How about you guys? Any particular scenario that you envision arrowing a monster? Snow....ice...father's old treestand location......first day of the season......long bow.....compound at 50 yards....old hunting spot with some history....uncle's old bow????

The only Dream/ Nightmare I have is of me shooting a Monster buck this year and not putting him down. To make a long story short. I hit him left to right perfect but ducked more than I had anticipated. Only good thing that came out of it was that I have him on trail cam a month later. Thats why he's my Avatar and the buck I'll be after next season.

Oddly enough, it was exactly how I arrowed my buck last year....after gaining permission mid summer and setting cams out then getting pictures of the buck, I knew about where I wanted to set up....I envisioned him stepping out on this worn trail from the cedar thicket heading to the corn fields right at dark, and he played into it like he memorized the script. I actually hung the stand 15 yards further down the treeline the day before season to tweak the setup, and it worked out amazing offering me a perfect shot.

I don't think I'll match that buck or that feeling for several years now....I'm looking at maybe 3-4 weekends a year max to hunt the next 4 falls, so I will be hoping for the best but remain realistic.

Its all i dream about day in and day out.... usually its one perticular deer on that farm that I have history with but the unexpected giant could appear out of anywhere and thats what keeps me going! I love every aspect to this sport and even more so learning to become better at successfully winning the chess match with the mature ones!

I can also see this happening here soon....buck or doe, does not matter.

Bowhunting from the ground, preferably backed up against a big root system....

It's in us all whether we harvest a good buck every year or not. Especially when you have a history with some bucks, you know they are around, but never see them only on trailcam at 1 a.m. Thats what makes these bucks get so big, their willingness to outsmart us as hunters. Then we come up with a game plan to hopefully catch that deer off guard and sometimes hopefully have a little luck on our side as well!

I second the bowhunting from the ground scenario. Last season I had an encounter with a spike at 15 yards on the ground.

I replay that scenario in my head a lot. I came to full draw on it before I realized it was a spike and not a doe. I had already tagged my buck but wouldn't have hesitated to fill one of my doe tags.

How do you sleep at night Rory? Do you wake up with a racing heart and a sweaty brow? That deer is freakin' awesome. Can't wait to see your photos this fall.

I have felt this way for over 20 years. It's kind of wild how many times some of those dreams come true. Some of them EXACTLY how you dreamed it. That's the coolest for me.

It's interesting, since I bought my new land (2 seasons), I have almost become more fascinated by caring for the land and the animals. It's very fun.

I do it all the time Brett. When I'm scouting, I find the spot, work out the scenario....then it plays over and over in my head until I make it happen.

I think and dream about it just about everyday of my life! I guess it's nice to see that I'm not the only one! I think it's what keeps us going when we are in pursuit of our trophy, no matter how big it may be. Hence my forum name AntlerAddict........ I'm addicted to it!
