We have all been a part of the carbon arrow craze (atleast most of us) but has anyone went back to aluminum or have you thought about it? It's still proven that aluminums are a more consistent arrow, but lacks the durability. I have went back to aluminums for target this year (2312 Cobalts with 100gr up front) and I can honestly say these are the best shooting arrows I have ever put through my bow. It really has me thinking about going back to them to hunt with this year. Unless I manage on getting a free dozen or two of something, like I seemingly always do. I'm not the only one shooting aluminums for target these days either, many of the top Pro's are shooting them for 3D as well (Levi Morgan, Darrin Christenberry, Jeff Hopkins, along with many others) so there has to be something to them. What say ye?
I haven't hunted with anything but aluminum arrows. For target shooting, indoors and 3-d, I used either ACC's or aluminums (X7's). I've never shot a carbon....ever.
I really don't see where aluminum would make THAT much more of a difference, as far as accuracy is concerned. The difference I would notice, however, would be the constant need to purchase new arrows. For that reason, I'll continue to shoot carbon. Word?
Unless a person goes through each carbon arrow and culls the bad ones out when they make a purchase, XX75 or XX78 aluminums are almost always more consistent. Most shops aren't going to do that. After having tried all carbons for 3 years I've gone to aluminum/carbons and have been thinking of going back to XX78's. I will NEVER shoot an all carbon arrow again......too many inconsistencies IMO.
I haven't given it much of a thought but I do still have about a dozen 2117 Gamegetters with feather fletchings from the 80's....so I guess they are durable.... SB
The trophy ridge carbon arrow best arrow I have ever sent through my bow....Ill be sticking with them for the time being
The carbon arrows I shoot are extremely consistant in spine and straightness. I'll keep shooting them. I may fool around with other brands but when it comes time to make my deer hunting arrows I'll stick with what works for me.
I told myself I'd never shoot a carbon arrow, never! Guess what, I'm shooting a an arrow that's got some carbon In It. Never though will I shoot an all carbon arrow. I still love my aluminum's.
I shot XX78's for the first 4-5 years or so. I also shot them with mechanical heads. It was a disaster for my bowhunting life as I could not get much penetration due to my bow speed and not knowing crud about how to tune a bow. Since I switched over the carbon arrows and fixed heads, the results speak for themselves. I will not go back to aluminum arrows or mechanical heads. I feel great using my Beman 340's and 400's with fixed heads.
I like the fact that you can stick 3 or 4 deer with a single carbon arrow (Axis) and pull it out of the stump or tree after it went through the deer; replace the broadhead and stick it back in the quiver. You can't do that with aluminums without worrying about if they are straight or not. It's not like they are inconsistant to where you would notice it hunting. Target practice may a different story but, I don't care if Im a quarter of an inch of at 30 yards shooting my carbons at the deer.
I agree to a point but It does depend on the size of aluminum's your shooting. The strongest arrow I've ever shot Is my 340 FMJ's I started shooting last year but a very close 2nd Is the Easton XX75 2216's I shot for MANY years. They are a fence post of an arrow and very strong.
Aluminum???? Hell, I going back to wood arrows with a stone head for hunting this year, I can't wait!
Finch, I can honestly say I can tell a difference through my target bow, these aluminums DO shoot better. They absolutely wad up in the target. For hunting? Does it matter that much? Probably not.
