    He said the pallet was some sort of rammed into hard enough to break the end of it up a bit...

    Well shoot. If it took the buyer a week to notice that the package was damaged, then I'd say it's mostly on the buyer. But if it didn't come damaged but the inside was somehow damaged because it wasn't packed properly then the seller.
    Always hard situations shipping.

    Good points... He definitely should have inspected it for damage.
