Most of the bands and underground fans would argue that it could have been the worst thing for Grunge.... perfect example of what can happen when "mainstream" is brought into music... Staind's Dysfunction cd compared to any of their new cd's.

I would put Would by Alice In Chains at or above Smells Like Teen Spirit.

The whole thing with Nirvana is that they weren't as popular until after Kurt Cobain killed himself... it's the same thing as 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. At the time they were performing they weren't considered "the best", but once they passed away that instantly changed and they became "the best ever"

well i like pretty much all of the bands i've seen on this thread. being a metal head slash rock guy it's hard for me to pick the best ever.
black sabbath really got the ball rolling for alot of the music i like, so did zeppelin, doors, hendrix , ac/dc
siman08/oh... surprised to hear a nirvana fan say that teen spirit is the best song, i would pick many many other nirvana songs before that overplayed and popularized song, even though i still like it :)

cmon, are you serious??????? of all the grunge bands, Alice in Chains was THE defining sound of the lot of them... PJ, Nirvana, STP, etc... pretenders, all of them... best thing to come out of Nirvana was Dave Grohl and foo fighters... and the only band that remotely compared was soundgarden

"I'm a rocker through and through. Here's a list of my favorite bands: AC/DC, Van Halen not Van Hagar, Skynyrd, Def Leppard.."

I absolutly HATE nirvana. Hate them.

IMO it is Pink Floyd musically, Kiss for best show/live band.

    Metallica, Van Halen honorable mention.

Grunge did not last for any band to warrant best band ever status. I loved Alice in Chains and Nirvana but grunge had no where near the longevity to be claimed this.
This is BEST BAND EVER not your favorite band. They need to have longevity, great musically and a band that has lasted the test of time. Not one album wonders.

Exactly Tribal....this is not a "what's your favotite" this is a who is the best...you gotta leave your bias out of it if all possible...I really don't care for Led Zep, but I know they are a great band just on record sales alone...some of you are much younger than me and I understand your love for grunge, but honestly, you can't put those bands anywhere close to some of the originals on the list...Alice chains absolutely kicked off the grunge scene with Man in the Box in 1990...if I had to pick one, it would have to be the Beatles..they changed music forever...and I hate the Beatles!

Record sales don't mean squat to me. Celine Dion and Whitney Houston have sold millions of records.... doesn't make them the best. I have to be bias because I don't listen to music by how much they sell....I listen if I like the sound or lyrics. That being said I like to many to mention but most on your list.

x2. I'm glad someone mentioned them. Middle pink floyd, not so much the early stuff, and certainly not later.

    I'm glad Siman mentioned Skynyrd.

They are my favorite of all time but I like ACDC, Guns N' Roses, Hendrix, the Stones and the Beatles as well.

    Tool.

    :D

Never was much into the 'hair bands'. Tho' I did see Dokken, Motley Crue x2, Metallica x2, Quiet Riot and Ratt in concert. Dokken opened for Judas Priest, Motley Crue opened for Ozzy, Quiet Riot opened for Black Sabbath. Ratt opened for ?. I saw Dio but I'm pretty sure that wasn't it. Metallica opened for Ozzy another time I went. Hard to remember for sure. There were also those Megadeath, Slayer and Anthrax concerts.

BTW, GNR sucks and back in the day... everyone had a whitesnake album. :)

Just defining what exactly "greatest band of all time" means is impossible to agree on, so I doubt we all we agree on the actual band.

Is the greatest band the most influential band of all time? Because if that's the case, it is most certainly, without a doubt, The Beatles.

Is the greatest band the most poetic or greatest lyricist of all time? Because if that's the case, it is most certainly, without a doubt, Bob Dylan.

Is the greatest band the band with the most passionate and loyal fan base? Because if that's the case, it is most certainly, without a doubt, The Grateful Dead

With all that being said, IMHO, The Grateful Dead is the greatest band of all time, with Bob Dylan as the greatest musician/artist of all time.

Oh and BTW, never, ever mention Nirvana, GnR or any other crap grunge or hair band in the greatest band of all time discussion ever again. Please. It's insulting to music snobs all around the world.
