My nephew got his first bowkill tonight, nothing great, just a little button buck with a really pretty hide on it, but it's his first, and he did it with a bow, and I got to hang from a tree just 20yds from him and watch. No pic's as of yet, but it was pretty cool watching him get the shakes, start to draw his bow and not be able, start again and not be able, then the third try he composed himself and got the bow back through all his shakes, and settled the pin, and THWAACK!!! Nailed him a little high, blew through the shoulder blade, and appeared to have cut the aorta and get a little of both lungs at the tops. No pass through with his Ultratec at about 56# and 28.5", but hitting that deer like that and punching that BH through the THICK part of the shoulder blade, I'm not too overly surprised. As it was though, that Slick Trick did its job and about 200yds later, we found him. The young man dragged that deer all the way out of the woods as he felt it was his "responsibility," and I couldn't be happier, even if I did see a 170 or so buck that I just couldn't get any closer than 46yds..... I was sincerely hoping for a double, but I can HONESTLY say, I'm completely fine not getting that big buck as I was able to witness a 16yr old kid get his first bow kill very up close and personal, and that in and of itself was what REALLY made my night. A big CONGRATS to Andrew on what we can only hope will be the first of MANY!!!
I'll pass on the "Congrats." You know, standing there next to him as we walked upon his first kill (he's only ever bowhunted, and this was his 3rd year, and his first shot he's ever taken), after a quick check to ensure he was dead, I felt as if the young man had suddenly became a man as I gave him a handshake and congratulated him. And as he becomes a part of this brotherhood, he becomes a part of tradition, a tradition that we can all thankfully and graciously enjoy. Sort of reminds me of a George Strait song.... "Life's not the breaths you take, but the moments that take your breath away." Today WAS a good day. And as I walked down away from the house, toward where the deer was so Andrew's Dad could get some pic's and such, I looked up above, and thanked God for the day and opportunities he was gracious enough to grant us today.
Congrats to him! @ of my nephews got into hunting because of their uncles and they are killers .... great stuff there, Doug
Thanks Guys, I'll pass on the "Congrats." Tomorrow, he'll get the opportunity to do a little butchering as well. All in all, I'm very happy. He won't get to hunt in the morning, but I'm sure hoping that big buck makes a mistake and gets a little closer. After re-working him over in my head, I'm thinking he's gonna run right in the mid 160's if my guestimations were right. Maybe if the Good Lord blesses me so, I'll know for sure tomorrow. But as it is, I feel pretty blessed already.
That's awesome! Congratulations go out to him. Makes me a bit sentimental as it reminds me of how I killed my first deer... first deer was a BB, with a bow, and my uncle (he's really my cousin, but 25 years older than me) was there to witness much the same thing you did. Great memories. You'll both share them forever!
The kid did okay, I found his arrow this morning, after my hunt, we took the deer down to the check station to check it in, and came home and butchered it. He's eating BACKSTRAP as I'm typing this..... All in all a good weekend!!! Now to see if some magic can happen tonight.....
thats awesome I bet he was pumped up huh? how many times do you get to say i was there on this persons first bow kill? that is so cool. I cant wait to get my boy on something and my daughters when they get older! great job and a memory for life!
That is wonderful!! Congrats to him! You deserve a thank you and a pat on the back for taking a kid hunting AND allowing him to hunt within 20 yards of you. That's love, Bro!! Sal
