Only twice that I could see, but I honestly did check for more due to the late hour and taking the deer in the next day. The first shot was the best shot. Right through the lungs. A tad high and a tad back if I'm being nit picky, but still right within the margin of error and considering the circumstances, I'm thrilled with the shot he made! Another shot went through the neck which may have been the last one. Gutting the deer, I didn't notice any other internal damage other than the lungs so no bullets traveled through the guts/liver. The other shots could have hit muscle somewhere, but didn't see any evidence of that.
Way to get him hooked. These moments are the glue that keep you close when the hard times hit later. I'm still waiting for my 20 yr old to get his first deer, but he has never hunted with anything but a bow.
Congrats on the buck! A memory that will last forever for sure. My 10 yr old son shot his first deer last year. It was a button buck but to me it was the best buck I've ever been involved with hunting. Way to get them hooked young and glad he could keep his composure for that long Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Update: Got the results of the cementum annuli aging and it turns out my son’s buck was 4.5 years old so not the buck we thought he was when we shot him, but he must’ve been an offspring because the antler configuration was almost identical to a buck all over our cameras in 2014. It doesn’t matter, just thought it was interesting! Here’s a pic of the slide under the microscope. Can’t say enough about Henry Chidgey at Wildlife Analytical Laboratories! He went above and beyond in his customer service! Check them out at DeerAge.com. The only way to know the exact age of a deer.
