A Little Oxymoronic Isn't It?

Monday, bow season opens here and I'll be hunting deer. For the past three weeks we've had a fawn that still has faint spots showing up alone and eating on the acorns and clover in the yard. The wife thought I should make a feeder for it, but I procrastinated knowing this is part of the game of life. Yesterday, this fawn showed up with another smaller fawn. When my wife saw them she got, what's the word for it, insistent that I build a feeding trough to start feeding the deer in the yard. She's called 3 times today asking if I bought the materials. This last time I told her yes. Now, I have to go build a trough and fill it with shelled corn to feed something that I hope to be killing elsewhere on the property, because you can't hunt anywhere near a feeding station in Iowa. To me, this is the quintessential oxymoronic situation.

It would be far better just to scatter some on the side of the lawn. That way you won't have all that nose to nose feeding that they say spreads diseases. You want to really collect a herd throw out some smashed up apples, some raw peanuts in a shell(not cooked.....raw)they're a bit pricey so just a hand full or two every night.

Materials for the trough - $49.00, Shelled corn 50# bag - $7.75, not having to listen to my wife cry - PRICELESS.

The bottom is mostly hardware cloth reinforced with a 2x4 so when it rains the water doesn't sit on the corn and cause it to start germinating. 2' wide and 5' long sitting 2' off the ground. Not too bad for my first attempt at one working without plans.

You can't give them all a name, feed them and then shoot them while they chow down. It just isn't fair chase. LOL Besides that.... we'll tell your wifey when she gets back.

You may want to be careful with that set-up because even with good drainage that corn will mold and it will become a stinking mess. You may want to consider Purina Deer Chow with Water Shield. It costs a little more but it won't mold and they love it.

This is what it looks like. I wouldn't pay that price for it, the link is just for reference. I get it through a local feed & seed store for $14 a bag.

LOL, or doesn't have a wife or girlfriend:)

Nice job on the feeder. I'm sure there are a few other benefits to having your wife in a happy mood:)
