I got to the woods about 2 last night for the evening sit. On the way in to my stand there are 4 scrapes along the old road running through the property. I also made a mock scrape about two weeks ago near my stand, and yesterday brought some buck urine to refill my dripper. The scrapes, including the mock, have been getting hit this week, and while walking in I dribbled a little fresh buck pee in each scrape. Filled the dripper, got settled in my stand, and watched the squirrels do their thing. Hasn't been much deer movement at all until right at sunset, and that being does and young bucks if any. The farmers next door cut the corn and beans down a few days ago, and with this cooler weather I'm thinking things will be picking up soon. A few long hours go by, and at about 5 I notice a flicker down the trail at the last scrape. There HE is. The big boy (150 ten pointer) I haven't seen since last year! He is at the scrape about 50 yds from my stand. He's working that scrape hard for about 10 minutes, tearing up the ground, peeing in it, working the tree above, and then... he's gone... just stepped into the woods and disappeared. The direction he was working up the trail would have brought him to my mock scrape/stand next. Talking about adrenaline rush! I can see in the woods, but can't see the buck anywhere. About 530 the does start appearing, working/feeding their way around the woods. Most of them are heading in the oposite direction of the scrapes. At about 6, a few does come walking from behind me with a fork in tow, heading toward the scrape line. As they approach the scrape where I saw the big guy, they all become a little skittish, and keep their distance. A minute later a nice size young 6 pointer comes trotting up behind the does to the same area near the scrape. As the young buck slowly nears the scrape i hear SNNOOOOORRTTTT !!! None of the deer run. The young buck, a little skittish now, still approaches the scrape slowly, i hear another SNNNNNNOOOOORRRRTTTT !!!! None of the does or the fork run, or seem alarmed. As the young buck still working his way toward the scrape gets closer, i hear another SSSSSNNNNNOOORTTTTT !!!! Then, out of nowhere, the big 10 comes busting out of the woods behind the scrape, attacks the young buck, and chases it down the trail out of sight. The does and fork, still calm as can be, decide they better follow the action to see the ass kickin, and trot off in the same direction. Things are picking up, should be a good weekend, along with the next couple weeks. Get out and catch some action. Stay tuned....
I am taking the entire day Wednesday off and sitting on my MOCK scrapes until Bone hits the ground. Grunt Call to mouth.
Why didn't you snort and grunt at him, especially after his snorts at the smaller buck? Never know, might have brought him your direction.
