I understand and agree that I offended some. I also apologized on page 2 with this post. I openly apologize to any of you who might not be as fortunate to have the time, cash or land to be in understanding of my original post, I should have thought of that, however I know that there are some here that know exactly what this thread is about. My hat is off to those of you that have to work extra hard to just get out there and do the best you can with what you have. My intention was not to offend you in any way. I will add that any of the posts that came across harsh or arrogant were intended only to those that felt the need to attack me when they felt slightly challenged by my approach and I was sure to quote their post as to direct my deliberate ignorance to them and them alone! I will gladly take this time to apologize to those of you that I offended. It is not my place to insult or judge. I was in hopes to find some others that take the same approach and I have no doubt that there are others regardless of how unorthodox it may be. Thank you to those that could understand that and forgive me to those that didn't!
i hunt public land and i cant just see all the deer in my area so i set myself for a certain standard of a buck or doe and stick with that
I read through this entire thread and saw some interesting points. The terms of "harvest" "killer" and "hunter" were brought up. If you own your land, and it is large enough quantity, to raise your own deer herd...if you do so in a manner specifically designed to feed, raise, and grow a deer population then you are more of a deer farmer imo than a hunter, and "harvest" is a proper term for any crop you plan to raise grow, and utilize...absolutely nothing wrong with that. A "hunter" has to seek his prey, sometimes on public, or private land that is owned by someone else with limited access, and limited means of scouting, etc. The term "hunter" takes on a new definition for these people. Although hunting does not necessarily include killing, "harvesting" definitely does. Nothing is "harvested" in living form, whether deer, cattle, corn, etc. I "harvest" my garden, I "hunt" wild game. I dedicate time, and effort into both, and teach my kids the value of sportsmanship, fair play, effort vs reward, and discipline vs. greed by both of these pursuits.
I hunt an area that has about 2 to 3 other guys that hunt it but no where close to me.my first goal it to fill the freezer so i take the first decent size doe that comes by then i become a buck HUNTER.I kill deer because that is part of the hunt but do not see myself as a killer.I am thankfully for each and every hunt if a tag an animal or not.I love to be in a stand an watch everything that nature has to offer.I have done 2 tours in iraq and and now out of the army and i use bow hunting and demolition derby as my therapy. So look at how YOU hunt and only you and there is no need to worry about what or how someone else hunts as long as it it is legal. We are all hunters and do it because we love it and that should be good enough!
I hate when people gussie up hunting to make themselves "holier than thou" Sure I appreciate the hunt and all that comes along with it. I'm respectful of the animal and appreciative of the gatherings of said animal. But for me.. I'm out to KILL. I can hike any other time of the year.
Bonesaw, I would like to hear what you think the difference between a hunter and a killer is. I personally do not have access to the amount or caliber of land you do. I have roughly .75 acres of woods and a small field that i worked to plant a food plot in to try and make my hunting experience one in which i am able to take a deer. With that being said i still have standards and morals for the deer i will take. They aren't as specific as yours but they still exist. I have yet to kill a deer as this is only my second season out but I will do my best to make ethical shots with in ranges that i am more than confident in my abilities. Does this make me a killer instead of a hunter?
Not that my opinion means anything, but from what your post states I would consider you to be a hunter. I would also consider you a gentleman which is way more than I could say for most (not all) of the previous posts to yours. It sounds to me that you are a year round hunter who takes advantage of the small window of opportunity we as archers legally get to HARVEST your deer.
Hmmm, So on this past Friday morning I let a small doe whose spots had almost faded pass unmolested at 18 yards. It was clear she is losing her summer coat and when the winter coat comes in her spots will be gone. If she passes at that time I'll stick her like nobodies biddness. SB sensitive Killa
Bonesaw, I'm confused! Are you trying to say that because you pick out an animal to hunt and will not kill anything but the chosen animal that you are a hunter and not a killer? Since we hunt with bow and arrow let's take the American Indian. Was he a hunter or a killer? I believe a hunter is one who goes afield looking to kill an animal to eat...... A killer is one who kills just to kill! Choosing the animal and hunting only the chosen animal makes you a purist in my book.
Well then I clearly am NOT a "hunter" because meat has NEVER, no EVER will be a reason I hunt! I hunt because I LOVE TO!!! I'd hunt wether I were allowed any venison or not..... could really careless about it.
Point taken and well said Bob. I do agree that a hunter hunts for food, however I'm afraid that there are some (here aswell as there) that use the term "hunt" as a way to justify their killing for the sake of killing and a way to get their kicks and that is becoming more and more evident throughout the forum since I posted this thread yesterday and the crazy thing is, only 1 person actually answer the only question that I asked in that original post, but many feel the need to run to another thread to avoid having to look in the mirror. Little do they know that they have answered my question through their ignorance. Thanks for your mature approach Bob. And perhaps I should change my user name to purist. Lmao!
Personally, I like the label of 'Terminator' best. Skynet had Hunter-Killers with no distiction of being one or the other and if HK's are good enough for SkyNet, then it's good enough for me.
You guys wouldn't understand. Poor bastards. You have to have wealth, fame, money, power, a big truck, lots of land, more money, and all the women you want to be on my level and understand what I meant. I have my deer so patterned I merely go to the woods to harvest him as if plucking a pumpkin from the garden. I would never belittle my approach by labeling my taking of an animals life killing....the audacity! I don't kill animals, I end their life by harvesting them. Again, I apologize as I don't want to offend anyone....you just simply don't have the monetary resources to be on my level and therefore you don't understand where I am coming from. May god have mercy on your soul.
