Was fortunate enough to put an arrow into a nice buck last friday night about 10 minutes after sunset. 32 yard broadside shot looked very good and felt good when I released, my buddy was in the tree with me but couldn't verify my shot. So we waited awhile before we got down to look for the arrow. Found the arrow buried in the beans covered with nice red blood. The bad news is we couldn't find a spot of blood anywhere in the CRP or beans. We watched him run after the shot as he was with 4 other bucks, he got behind a chain of cattail sloughs and we lost him. The other 4 bucks continued running so we had an idea of where to look. We went back to the truck to get lights and came back out, upon going back out we looked for over an hour around the sloughs and never found a speck of blood, so the search was called off until the morning. Here's what we found the next morning.... He died in the second slough out as when we got out there the next morning he had the catails painted red. Looked to be heart shot from the entrance and exit on what was left of the ribcage. Pretty amazing what coyotes can do.... they are getting thick in alot places here in ND. Here it is tagged up... hoping to get it scored later tonight. Cool little point coming off it's base...
Nice buck, sucks about the coyote's. They're pretty bad around here as well. Lost 3/4 of the meat on my first doe kill last year, let her lay for less than 2 hours trying to get a double. Never again. Congrats on the buck
Congrats on a great deer. Sorry to hear that you didn't get any meat off of him though. We have had some similar issues in the past with coyotes out here. It sure makes it tough to do the right things some times and give the deer some time when you can't find blood or have any doubts about the shot placement.
I noticed that cool little point right off the bat; congratulations, and sorry about the cape and meat!
Congrats on a fine buck! Very unfortunate about the coyotes, but honestly, in that situation, I would have most likely done the same thing (backing out).
Stinks when you make the right move (backing out) and you lose the meat to the yotes. Great buck. Congrats on a wonderful animal. You said you had a friend in the tree with ya, is there footage?
Unfortunately no, he's pretty silohuetted where he stands and hugs the tree trunk when deer are coming by. He likes to watch me shoot deer as I've shot my last three bucks from the same tree and he's been there for every one of them. Thanks for the congrats everyone. I'm not too bummed about the meat I have some doe tags left, my wife was pretty irrate that there would be no backstraps tonight for dinner. She doesn't care about the horns only her straps...
Awesome buck! I would have backed out too.... it sucks that the yotes got to your buck before you did but thats just how it goes sometimes. Congrats again on a fine buck!
