I have been using a very basic gps unit for the last couple of years, the Magellan explorist 100 my father sent me. The last couple of times I have used it, it failed to receive the satellite signal to fix my position. It cost me good one night when I was 1000 yards deep in on new territory. I barely made it out of the woods (long story). And today it cost me because it wnet haywire as I walked out into some steep hills while rain storms brewed above. I really wanted to hunt a very specific bit of topography and I blew it because I was walking in circles. LOL. I am just tired of it.

I need some suggestions on a good mid-level gps unit (say in the $150-$200 range). I want a unit that has a strong ability to pick up satellites even when there are clouds above and when I am diving down into steep terrain features. I want to order it within the next 24 hours.

    Thanks for any suggestions all.

do you have a Quantico 1:50? Go over to range control (by the rear 610 gate) and they will give you one...

I have and extra and can pass it along if you want it, can get more. Got it and the 2009-2010 Quantico maps laminated at Staples for $6.50

Love my Garmin, but the batteries never run out on a map.

Good point. I do carry extra batteries, flashlight and gps, but I also have at least one compass and usually two.

I don't have a topo map of Quantico Sean. Will range control give me a free topo of the base? I want mine laminated as well. I have been printing off topo maps at home and taking them into the woods with me as I use my gps. I am training myself to look at topography with my eyes and relate that to the topo map. So far I have struggled but seem to be getting better. I need the Gps unit to get me through here the next two weeks as I hunt my tail off.

    Best of luck Sean.

That is a huge offer Jeff, but I need one pronto you know. I might even go down and pick one up tonight. I have some very specific spots I want to hunt, some I have not even scouted that are a good distance back in the woods. I don't even want to be 50 yards off on my set up.

Where we hunt on Quantico, you are required by base to carry a Compass, Whistle and Flashlight...

I have a Silva Treker, great back up and we used to use them more then the GI issues one, better with the sight and the mirror for aiming.

Thanks Sean. I should be on Quantico around 10am and hunting by 11:30am-dark, Monday-Wed. then all day Thursday and Friday.

Also, I am going to be looking like a moron...I lost a challenge and have to wear a fu-manchu because I did not put a buck down by Halloween! Geez.

I am taking leave Wed noon to Sat noon to hunt... At work Mon, Tue and half Wed. Call me and leave a VM if I am not there, I am a moving target at work!

Also, if you go to Range Control - look up Lance Corporal Milik (pretty sure that is the spelling) he has the maps behind the counter. I have a 1:50 and a 1:250 - the 1:250 is HUGE.
