So saturday evening I was in a set for the 3 rd time in 2 days. Friday I saw a big 8 and did not get a shot. So I hunted there again Saturday morning and saw a decent buck and one small 6 pt. No big 8. Saturday evening I sat there again. I rarely sit a stand more than once a year. Unless I have reason to. 7000 acres is a lot of private land and I try to hunt as much of it as I can. I have been hunting this land for about 8 years and still have not hunted all of it, but I am trying to.. Anyways the only deer I saw saturday evening was a doe...but she was grown...Im talking 150-160 lbs. for VA that is a giant doe. Her face was larger than any deer I have ever seen live. She picked me off right away. I know it's weird, but I have thought about shooting her more than the big 8..she just may be a challenge I have never faced...So I will perch myself there again on Saturday morning...either one will get my best if they show up again... but she would be a prize
If you were in a tree...and that "nanny" picked you off - she won't forget. If and when you see her...she'll be staring right at you. Good luck anyway.
You’ll have to move trees to kill her I️ bet. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I swear they are harder to kill than a mature buck. I was in a tree with great cover all around me and backdrop. Wind was perfect as she was heading right towards me down the happy trail. I was sitting there waiting to make my move at the right time. I did not even move one iota or blink and she all of the sudden picked me off and gave me the ole head bob. Finally figured me out and bolted. I sat there dumbfounded wondering how in the heck did she do that. Giant doe.... one of the biggest I've ever seen. Looked like her belly was about to drag on the ground.
yeh the ol huzzie was smart. she stared at me until she knew. stopped and and then blew, the gig was up... dang her!!
Lol, and that is a TROPHY DOE! The doe I shot the other evening was that doe to me. She came in on my in trail, I had Evercalm on my boots. She came in from behind me and turned and walked down wind of me where she stopped, went on alert and stomped for bit. I had no intention of shooting a doe from that stand as I was after a nice clean 10 point or an old 9 that goes through there. When she did that I thought you old b**ch if I could get a shot at you you'd regret that. Well she finally turned and hopped a few feet further west and stopped with her head behind a tree. I stood up and turned around and threaded the arrow between two trees right through her vitals. I can't be sure but the last two times I've sat that stand there has been a doe that did similar crap. If this is the same one then that was one time she should have been more cautious. Maybe I hurt my chances with those target bucks but by damn, that doe won't bust me anymore.
personally, I think a 1.5 year old buck is the stupidest creature that walks.....a 2 year old or older doe, shoot.....they keen baby
This makes me think back to a couple of years ago. I was hunting a white oak ridge that was a funnel to come out of the fields in the morning. When the rut came in it was like all the does left there fawns there so they could go and bred. I was hunting one morning and watched a couple of fawns they walked all around me looked at me and never cared. About 30 min later 2 more fawns came in as soon as they came in it was almost instant they started using there nose tring to figure out what I was. They never figured me out. But I always look back and think about the difference in the two groups of fawns and how the doe that raised the second set must have been a more mature doe and did a much better job at raising her baby's on how to smell danger. That's one good reason to shoot old does. You don't want them teaching those fawns to be that smart.
If any of you guys follow Midwest Whitetail, Bill Winke always shoots big nanny does that bust him so they don't ever do it again!
One of the best shows if not the best show on. I like Bill, he's not the best shot and he does take some questionable ones, but I have and do sometimes too..
I swear I have a doe on my property that knows every stand I have hung. She picks me off immediately no matter what stand I'm in. Crazy how smart they are.
Week 1/2 ago I had a big nanny doe come in with two yearlings. They fed 10 feet from my blind. You could tell the mamma didn’t like the fact that blind was there. I don’t think she saw me nor did she smell me. She just knew something was up. I hunt all that week and she never came back
