We had a resident deer the last year on one of our fortys that We named ed he was nearly like a pet, every time we pulled camera cars he was all over them, last year he was 3 and a half and I tried to talk my father into letting him walk because I figured one more year and he would blow up, well dad's theory was that no other bucks would come onto that particular piece as long as he was living there, because he didnt go very far, he was on camera morning midday and night, every day, Now with the management standards of the hunters around us we were also worried he wouldnt make it another year because he was so daylight active. So I reluctantly agreed that whoever saw him first had to shoot him. In hopes that a bigger buck would move in. Well I "won" the dice roll between my dad my brother in-law and myself, for who was going to sit on that plot the first nightSo here is a post I made in my team thread last year after the opening night hunt: Well I effed up, The plan worked perfectly we had the deer patterned everyday 630. He read the script I didnt. I Settled put the pin in the middle of his chest, squeezed the trigger, the lumenok looked good hit him maybe an inch or two higher than I was aiming, but he ran 15 yards stopped behind a pine and I kept waiting for him to go down, he stood at about 35 for about 4-5 minutes looking back like what the heck just happend then he slowly walked to the south, jumped the horse pasture fence, I kept waiting for him to tip, the shot looked good, he zig zagged back and forth al over the east fenceline in the horse pasture not wanting to cross it again so it looked, I could see the red streak down the side of his chest, it looked good like I said maybe a hair high, finally he crossed the fence and cut in we waited til 1130, and tracked him on specs the size of pencil erasers every 10 ft to 20 yards for about 400-500 yards he stopped only twice, never bedded just kept walking slowly, then just gradually ran out of blood. I put cameras out in different spots, to see if he survived if he stays anywhere close, I just feel like I failed that deer, pretty bummed. So after that happend, and after looking endlessly, and when the corn came off expecting to find the carcass, or expecting to find it shed hunting this spring, or expecting to get atleast a trail cam picture of him if he was still alive, Nothing, all of the people around us stopped getting anything of him as well, so I figured the wolves must have gotten him. But all was still uncertain and full of guilt/hope. Well The Chapter ended yes when my mother was on facebook and someone posted a picture of a big buck that got hit on the road near their house she sent me a text picture of the picture of the buck just because she knows I always like to know whats going on, and when I opened it, it was nearly like seeing a ghost, the forked browtine starred at me and the white streak behind his nose, were dead give aways not to mention the redish forehead, and the dark muzzle, with the white spot below his right nostril, No doubt, but man did he grow here is a picture from him last year, I will post the deer kill picture to follow
It's really to bad when deer like that get hit by a car or poached. Hes huge! Atleast he shared his genetics for a cpl years!
HOLY ****. he blew into a stud. what is going to happen with him are you getting him or did the other people take him
Wow! That's crazy, he blew up! What an excellent example of why to let young deer grow up. At least you know for sure what happened to him now.
We don't know who hit him, and neither did the neighbor that was there but the person who hit him took him, I am just happy he didn't rot somewhere but car kills are always disappointing
Holy drop tine!!!! what a stud, such a sad story sorry to hear! would rather see you holding them horns up in the pic!
That's a bummer it's a bitter sweet moment because at least you found out he didn't suffer and the the wolves didn't get him but it always sucks getting hit by a car as well
Holy drop tine batman! That sucks he was hit by a car. Sorry to hear it but good luck killing his descendants.
Wow...Nice buck! Too bad the road got to him before your arrow could. At least you know the ending to his story now. Aren't the bucks suppose to get "smarter" with age??
As I was reading I kept waiting for you to say he started showing up on camera again. Too bad about the road kill, great buck.
