A buddy of mine took his 3rd grade son out for his first IL youth Shot gun season last weekend. His son shot at a buck and they all searched and searched for some blood/hair and could not come up with anything. It looked like an great hit, especially after the buck spun around and got up on his two back legs and then appeared to do a medium paced limp off of the food plot.

Fast forward a week, he recieved a call from a neighbor that there were Coyotes howling up a storm the last couple of nights and Voltures circling above. So he went to investigate and guess what they found? It only was about 25 yards deep into the timber and ran only 50 yards from where it was shot. A nice respectable 10 pointer! Great 1st buck for a 3rd grader, or any body.

It's just too bad they didn't find him after the shot. it would be great to have a pic of Gage holding his 1st buck.

It laid only 50 yards from where it was shot, 25 yards into the timber and was never found?

I guess since they couldn't find blood they assumed he missed? But I thought the same thing.

Im sorry but there should be no congrats there.
His dad let him shoot at a deer thought he made a good shot then just because there was no blood right at the sight they walked away. Are you kidding me all he did was teach that lil kid to not try hard enough if things are perfect. which we all know they never are.
he could have looked for 50 yards or so around the shot area to make sure there was no blood or hair.
SUBURBAN STAND OUT you reall y think is ok because he atleast got the head?
    really c'mon man

Im with you. Although I will congratulate the kid for a good deer. Yes they should have looked harder and it is a shame that they didnt look for the deer. 1 hour of searching and they would have found that deer. Probably more like 10 minutes actually. Deer I have shot with a gun havent bled much so even if I think I missed I will search the area it ran for a few hundred yards to see if I can find blood. My friend actually shot a deer with a shotgun and we never found blood. We combed the area it went and found it dead in the creek. So I congratulate the kid for his deer and look down on the dad for not searching for it. Every hunter should know that they dont always bleed instantly.

I agree with pearce and soccerdan, it's great for the kid to have an opportunity to take a nice buck, but you have to put in the time to look for it afterwards. Imagine the memories the kid would've had if they spent the time to find it that day. If you don't want to put in the effort to follow up, then you shouldn't take the shot. Doesn't sound like they put much effort into looking for it if it was only 50 yds away.
