This really SUCKS!!! Just heard two bucks tested positive for CWD in SE Minnesota. Last time they found a deer positive north of there they shot most of the deer in the area.
when we first got land in NW Missouri you couldn't flick a booger from your stand without hitting a deer then we got hit with CWD in I think it was 2010 population starting to click back up but it was pretty slim pickings for a while, and still not what it was prior
Justin when they found it north of us they estimated 1800 deer and killed 1200 and never found another positive test. I am thinking they are going to destroy the heard by us.
It'll hit everywhere eventually, no way to stop it. It's unfortunate but I think it's one of those things that'll have to run it's course and nature will have to figure a work around. I'm not nearly as hyped over deer and management as I used to be for that very reason. I don't want to stay too attached to our local deer or the practice of management because I don't look for it to be very promising for the future.
I think they should start with abolishing all deer farms and preserves. get rid of the origin of the problem then work out from there. going to take a while but as long as there are deer farms we will have this problem.
Game agency management of CWD is far worse for the deer than CWD itself. WI killed a lot of deer to keep them from dying of CWD. Its been a complete failure and we have scaled back the nonsense to monitor only.
Not sure where he hunts, but Missouri has been dealing with CWD for that last several years. When they first discovered it, they applied the kill them all method here as well. I don't believe MDC released the numbers of how many deer that were taken out of the heard, but it was a very large number. The last line in the link talks about their targeted culling and why they believe it is a good method to slow the spread. It has really affected the numbers in several counties in Northwest and Northcentral Missouri. https://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/files/resources/2013/08/cwdsetrecstrt_8-23-13.pdf
