It's not about it making money. It's all about the total waste of money and mis management. Why do we have to pay for everything because people making these decisions and spending the money have the business sense of an ice cube? I dont' mind salarie, pensions (to a point), equipment, etc.... Cover the costs to operate. But you can multiply whatever that number is by 10,765,987 times. Maybe people like Brett would be getting their raise if money wasn't blown away in every other conceivable area.

Another example. I know a kid that does trash runs for the city. I saw him one day at around noon. Asked him if he had the day off. He said no he was done for the day. He (and the rest of the workers) get paid an 8 hour day no matter how fast they finish their run. He finished in 5 hours and got paid 8. So not only are they proving they don't need that many people to do the run, but they are going to pay them for not needing it. Or maybe have them work somewhere else after the run? I'm not a rocket scientist, but that's just pretty simple business. And that is an incling of an example. But if you combine every single avenue where just simple business sense comes into play and avoid all the wasted money? WOW. The world would be a happier place.

Sarah Palin comes to my hometown last year for some anniversary thing. Shows up for 4 hours i think it was and gets travel, appearance fee, etc..... I can't remember exactly what it cost the city, but it was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars by the time they factored in overtime cops, fire, rentals, everything else involved etc..... Ok!?!? That was fun? Educational? Forgotten about 2 hours later? For what?

Driving to work one day saw a county crew on the side of the road. There was a limb down. About 12 feet long 6 inch diameter or so. 7 guys, 4 trucks to tackle the job. 3 guys leaning on a rake, one guy drinking coffee, 2 guys chainsawing , one guy loading chipper. Came back an hour and a half later and they were still at it. So probably at least 14 man hours at whatever rate, gas to get there and run equipment for a 12 foot limb that one guy could handle. If that was at the golf course I would've hopped on the tractor, picked it up and threw it in a hedge somewhere less 500 2 hours of time.

Now you're talking about were I work. They throw money around like it's confetti. Most days when I'm there on the weekends...they don't even need me. I complain about it then I schedule the proceeding weekend.

Complain to management then they want to take disciplinary action against me for as it's put rocking the boat. Were is undercover boss when you need him.

But I have to mention the teachers with their masters degrees and all that schooling, good salary, pension, etc... that have a "teachers aid" to help them. Hmmmmmmmm that's an interesting way of spending the free money.

    Ok .. now i'm done.

Try teaching a class with 27 students in the class and then you can comment, LOL No way in hell would I want that job even with an aid.

Teachers aid help kids, so I guess spending money on kids is bad to some.

This is how the those Play 4 games work....On Average only 100 people will get the number exactly right a week per state, but if you play it 24 ways or it to come in any way 1000 people will get it per state.

The average person playing that game only will get it exactly right 1 time or Once a year.

for Cash 3 1000 people per week per state any combination per state 2000 per week.

The hardest and the lest likely combination to hit is any number is a straight number like 1111, 2222, 4444, and so on..

Here's the criminal part of it taxes...If you win a $100,000 your part after taxes will be about $72,000 Dollars after taxes. Win $1 Million Dollars and you will receive about $750,000 after taxes and you will still owe taxes on the money you have won and spent at the end of the year.

That's why people whom receive those lump sum payouts go broke within 2 years of getting the money. There's a woman that won the lottery that live in a mobile home not far from where I live that won over $24 Million Dollars went broke 6 years after winning it.

And a cashier whom played the same numbers for over 12 years on mega millions didn't play the numbers because it was raining and her car had slick tires..the number she had been playing came out she missed them and hung her self.

Play the lottery as a game of recreation not for the future.

While our jobs are nowhere as glorious as those on the outside make it out to be, overall I take the good with the bad with teaching. I'm not blind to the positives, but there are compromises and trade offs with the perks.

While this is totally and 100% off topic from VS's thread, I just thought I would throw my 2 cents in:D

    William Post

Won $16.2 million in the Pennsylvania lottery but now lives on his Social Security. Post's Mother sued him for a share of his winnings and one of his brothers was arrested for hiring a hit man to kill him, hoping to inherit a share of the winnings. His relationship with his other siblings was also strained and he spent some time in jail. Within a year, he was $1 million in debt and eventually declared bankruptcy. He now lives on only $450 a month and food stamps.

In 1993, Janite lee of Missouri

In 1993, Janite lee of Missouri won $18 million. Lee was generous to a variety of causes, including various political organizations, education programs and the community services. According to published reports, eight years after winning, Lee had filed for bankruptcy with only $700 left.

    Jeffrey Dampier

Won a $20 million jackpot and was then kidnapped and murdered by his own sister-in-law who hoped to inherit the winnings.

    Southeastern family

Won $4.2 million. In almost no time at almost all of their winnings were spent on a huge house, cars, and various requests from family members. They bought a huge house and succumbed to repeated family requests for help in paying off debts. Eleven years after winning, the couple got divorced, the house was sold and what was left of their lottery winnings had to be split.

People who play the lottery do not do so blindly. They have a notion of what they'd do if they won. Sadly, though, in all of their dreaming of big money, luxurious cars, new homes, and giving to family and worthy causes, they do not seem to plan for how they'll retain any of the winnings, which is the reason they don't.

I really don't think most on the outside get what it takes to become a good teacher or cop. My issue is the a certain party that rhymes with pee is demonzing all public workers and most do not understand the sacrifice it takes to be come a cop, firefighter or teacher.

Who would want to become a teacher today in college with the way the are treated? Who would want to become a cop? The benefits were one of the reasons we still got good people to take those jobs.

Again.... my problem is NOT with those people doing those jobs. I do respect and appreciate what they do. I believe they earn their paychecks and are very good at what they do. My problem is from above and the idiotic wasting of money in every other area known to mankind that goes beyond their salaries. It's simply absurd and wouldn't last in a business one week. I just don't see how it can be justified. It doesn't work in any other part of life, why is it allowed in the public sector spending?

Ah NY...were else can I pay 7k a year in school taxes....Years of out of control spending, insane contracts given to public sector unions, teachers unions, highway departments....the list would never end. But you know what ended? The money did. Boys and girls the well is dry.

Brett, I know we talked a while back in a pm about your BJJ past and I forget your belt ranking but could you train beginner to intermediate level student in BJJ if you got back into the swing a few nights a week? To what Dan said you can also make great money on ebay selling stuff. Both my father in law and good friend go to garage sales with their smart phones and look for buried treasure. My buddy had a lamp alone that he bought for $20.00 over the summer because the lamp was a broke antique;) He ended up selling the lamp on ebay with a rather large bulb that was missing for over $1500.00 and also makes $500.00-$1,000.00 a month buying old records and selling them on ebay.

Race, no I could not teach the beginner/intermediate because I am just a blue belt ( had it for 4-5 years). Once I got my blue belt in BJJ I started to train in everything. I did not really focus on gi training, rather I focused on fighting and all the skills that go with it. If I got back and got serious I think I could do some damage and improve pretty rapidly with the gi. As for teaching beginner/intermediate fighting skills, yes I think I could do it after I got some of the rust off.

BTW guys, I NEVER once complained about not getting a raise. I understand what this economy is all about. However, never in a million years did I predict my wife and I not receiving a raise for 8 years. My kids are growing and the costs are rising which means my pocketbook is going broke. Not fun by any stretch of the imagination. My wife is one heck of a teacher and one of the better girls highschool basketball coaches in the state of VA. She even had to turn down a D-1 assitant coaching position last year because we could not move due to our house being so turned upside down. I feel really bad for her. Anyways guys, I appreciate all of the advice. Now it is time to get to work on those ideas. I am going to start researching the e-bay stuff and possibly some overnight security gigs until I get a little tenure in the police department and can work some OT.

I guess that's the backlash for all the years of above average pay, benefits and job security once tenured. I'll admit 7 years without a raise seems like a long time... but the ungodly retirement and benefits have really come to task on the educational systems. We'd be far better off if 20 years ago we made it possible to get rid of dead wood and incompetants. So now in a time when 10 percent of the nation has no job or prospects of a good one on the horizon... raises are not a top priority. when states and municipalities can't keep up with the cost of doing business(again because there is a heavy load of benefits and retirement packages to pay at all levels of the state/county/school district etc etc et"
Most school systems pay above local wages, benefits and retirement to people who work 9 months or so a year. I feel your pain, my wife was a very dedicated teacher. Their unions sucked when it came time to get tough. During good times they couldn't get a raise..... SOOOO.... you can see the problem. There just isn't enough money to make everyone rich and above average income at present. You have tenure you're guarnateed one thing... a job that'll pay you more than the average in the neighborhood..... unless of course you're living beyong your means. That's my rant for today. It does suck not seeing some increase in 7 years.... but what did they do for you in the 20 years before.

P.S. I have one buddy that makes about ... well I better not say how much buying and selling old radios and vaccum tubes. He bought a corvette, a Harley, a $20000 ring for his wife and a monster motor home in the past few years with his Ebay side job. I have another buddy that pocketed about 60 grand a year for several years doing body work in the back yard. He gave it up to take a "STATE" job with all the benefits. LOL His real job before the state job was service manager for a big auto dealership.
