I didn't think about that. He has been doing it quite some time now. I guess a good 6 years or so now.

    Excellent posts by all.

Dan, I will be able to pretty much train martial arts for free, I know a lot of people. I still hear you on the time issue. If I did get a 2nd job I would likely try to get it overnight when my family is sleeping. If not, I have to do what I have to do.

I have some trees out back that have fallen, maybe I need to cut em up and sell them this winter/next winter. Sorry to bother you all with this stuff, but we have been dealing with this for years and it is getting old. It sickens me to see my house lose a couple hundred thousand dollars in 5 years because of the economy. :(

No Problem. My wife and my Mom are rummage sale hounds. I'm into the outdoors stuff, hunting, fishing, taxidermy
and anything else outdoorsy. My wife would see old fishing lures and pick them up or mounts. She would call me and ask if I wanted them or not. Now she just sends a picture with her phone. If I thought I could make some money on it I would have her offer less for it. Theses are things people want to get rid of. I will go on e-bay and see what they are selling for and list it. I'm set up at work to ship anything I want so that's not an issue. I make an extra $2000.00 a year I call it my hunting money. It really doesn't take that much time.

I'm not 130 but I think I get the picture.

They're saying hit up garage/rummage/estate/yard sales and pick out items you think will sell well on eBay. I've never done it but if it were me, I would grab a smartphone and go garage sailing. When I found something for cheap that looks like it would sell well on eBay, I would jump on the smartphone and search for it on eBay. If I would at least double in profit, I would buy it.

A guy I know does this part time but he said he makes good enough money to retire from his main job as soon as he's able to. He does more than just local garage sales though. He'll travel a couple hours to look at promising venues like trade shows and stuff like that.

Flip houses. If you know someone that is into that, talk to them about it. You can make some good money in the right situation.

2 years ago we did 3 houses that made me more than my salary. Not sure I get the joke, but whatever..... works for me.

Just got done with one that I bought for 28k(divorce), put 22k into it. Roof, siding, windows, flooring, gutted plaster and lathe -sheetrocked, some plumbing and wiring. Sold it for 84k. Got a preposession agreement and closed on it in the morning and had the closing for selling it that afternoon.

What is lost in all this for Brett is the fact he and his wife are working to better others in their communities and help protect others where they live. Both could work in the private sector and make more money IMO, but they have made a choice to sacrifice some pay and work to make the lives in their communites better.

They cannot get a raise in 8 years, pathetic IMO. We are so screwed up in the way we pay our police men, Fire fighters and teachers IMO.

Respectfully disagree. Has nothing to do with lack of appreciation or respect for what the public sector does. It's a different world when talking about public and private sectors. The pure misuse of how they spend money alone is laughable. Take the public sector mentality and apply it to running a business and you'll be closing the doors in a week. I could go on for endless hours giving examples. Again.... nothing against anyone and no lack of apprecitation. It just is what it is.

I see what your saying but you must have extra money on hand in order to purchase a house and then pay for renovations. Its a good money maker but with the current housing market it may take awhile to sell the house.

Sure he does, he's the one not getting a raise. That is a lack of respect.

Yes Public sectors do not run like a business nor should they. Let us run a for profit police force and Fire Deptartment and see how that works out. M

My point is even inside the public sector the money is sooooooo miss spent it's crazy. Example they have cut the police force in Wayne County here and closed some parks. There was a case were a public worker at the main office got another job and resigned from her post. It was written in her contract she got 200,000 severance package. 200,000 of tax payer money for quitting and getting another job. Now that is crazy, when they looked into this in more detail all the high ranking officials had the same deal and their pension were outstanding. Mean while Policemen and Firemen were being layed off and being forced to pay more into their retirement.

Our systems are whacked how we pay people.

Unless you have someone that will buy the house and hold the mortgage if need be until it sells. He works on a percentage and doesn't need to know a thing about the renovations, materials, work etc..... Just takes a cut of the profit. Win win.

Yes I agree the maket obviously isn't near what it once was, but people still do buy houses and you can still make good money if it's right.

You are right. Its a good idea but to some its not. Someone could make alot of money doing it. Around here it would be very difficult.

    That's my point as well

    Yes they should.

I need a fairway mower that runs around 30-35k. Do I have the luxury of just ordering one? Do I just apply a "tax" to my golfers this year and raise greens fees 10 %? Wouldn't have many people playing. City council just passed a 1million dollar fire truck and guess who pays for it? It's just insane. That's one example of a zillion I could point out. Just wasted money because they have the taxpayers to fall back on. There's no choices for us. Ther'es choices for golf courses (insert any business) you give your money to.

You know what I have to do to give myself a raise and add money to my retirement? Figure out a way how to generate it everyday

No they cannot, would you ever build a bridge or a road knowing you cannot make money? Would you build or maitain a park? Library? How about a fire department? Now their is a good investment, how would you fund it and make money.

Goverment needs a change for sure, but in no way should they run like a business, because they are not a business.
