The local school district of which my wife is a teacher announced today that they will not consider raises for teachers until 2015. That pretty much means I will not receive a raise until 2015 at the earliest either because I work for the local government. Both my wife and I have not had a raise since 2007, which means we will have not received a raise for 8 years if we get one in 2015. Not complaining too bad since MANY people are worse off than us, however we bought a house in 2006 based on it's value and our anticipation of future payraises. No payraises + our house losing 40% of it's value + 3 growing children=we are f'ed. Dang man. I need to come up with a way to gain a month or two of mortgage costs per year to add to my income. I really wish I could work OT at work, but that has dried up pretty much, and I won't be eligible for it for some time because I just got on with the department. Any of you guys work extra jobs or have ideas on how to make an extra 5k-6k per year? Thanks.
Are you handy with household maintenance or just fixing things in general? That's how I make some extra money, helping people pour concrete, fix or replace windows, fix a leaking roof, etc. doesn't take a whole lot of time, but just takes some know how
Come work where I work at....One of my co-workers annual salary was $76,000 dollars. When she only suppose to make $26,000. She's mad because she made a $1,000 less than last year. Even if she didn't spend any time home with her Grand kids and she's cranky all the time, never smiles, walks like a man. Dresses like a man curses like a sailor. That's saying a lot since I'm prior Navy. Her Vehicle is paid off, house is paid off, but spends nearly every waking moment at work 12 hours a day 6 days a week. So if money an issue please shoot me a private and I'll tell you more. But be warned..... YOU WILL NEVER HUNT OR FISH AGAIN! I WAS ONLY ABLE TO FISH ONCE LAST YEAR AND HUNTED 8 DAYS
Plasma center nearby? I've done it since college, its $50 a week for about two hours a week. Its not a lot but a bit extra.
Buy and sell on Ebay, my father does that alot. He buys Knives and stuff like that at garage sales or gun shows. Just make sure you know what they go for.
Ben Franklin... "Necessity is the mother of invention." Can you cook? Open a weekend restaurant cooking one or two of your favorites. Catering can be lucrative, do you do good bbq. If you like kids, go to Clown college and do b'day parties. Boundless opportunities and all of them leave you in charge of your schedule.
I'd like to approach this from a different perspective. Is there anything you can cut instead? Many times people can cut or eliminate their cable/satellite bill, cell phone bill, land line bill, Netflix, etc. Those things can add up to a lot of money. What about starting to collect coupons? My wife saves us $500-800 per year on coupons. Can you refinance your mortgage to get the payment down lower? Sometimes it is not a matter of how much you make but how much you spend. My guess is that there isn't there going to be a single answer. It will be a combination of several changes to get you where you want to be. Good luck Brett.
Good points Brad. We switched over to DirectTV/Cable(basic) internet (slowest type) and saved a good amount of money. We also modified our cell phone service and saved money. I guess we have to dig deeper and figure it out. My wife and I don't spend money on much of anything other than what we need. It doesn't help that we live in one of the richest counties in the USA and are public servants....hurting right now. On a side note, we have a late antlerless only season still going until March 31st in my county. I may have to try and drop a couple more does for the freezer.
I agree with BJE80 about the coupon thing. I am no extreme couponer or anything I mainly try to save on groceries and cleaning/laundry products. For the past year i have been clipping like an old lady every Sunday and it is consistently putting money in our pocket. Learn your local grocery stores, which ones have double coupons, coupon policy, get on there MVP card or VIC card programs and create an account online. Last friday was grocery day at our house and I hit Harris Teeter up, after 2 hours I checked out with my total ring up coming to $415 but after $124 in coupon savings and another $40 in VIC savings I ended up right around $250. If I can save $100 to $200 a month this way I'm looking at $1200 to $2400 a year with very little time invested. Look into an equity enhancement program on your mortgage. Basically it helps you pay extra on your mortgage without increasing your monthly expenses too much. For example if your mortgage is $1200 a month you would want to pay something like $650 bi-weekly so instead of paying $14,400 in a year @$1200 per month you pay $16,900 with the $650 bi-weekly payments. That extra $2500 is coming straight off the principal. Even if you couldn't pay extra and you just did $600 bi-weekly that would still be $15,600 a year with the extra $1200 coming off the principal. It might not seem like much but the extra principal payments and the resulting lower interest multiplied over the life of a mortgage is huge. My mortgage = $900 I pay $550 every two weeks and it turned my 30 year mortgage into an 18 year mortgage(approx) cutting 12 years of payments off the back end saving me in excess of $100,000. That's not peanuts, this system could help you offset the poor market right now and prevent you from getting further upside down. Being as that you are a police officer now maybe you could find some extra work in private security or with your mma background you could provide training at your current work. Just spitballing as I don't really know how that all works at your job obviously. Whenever I need extra money I go back to bartending as there is always money in that scene and even if you can't bartend some places pay there security teams pretty good money.
NEW, that is some good advice man, thank you. Some of those things I have never thought of and I do appreciate it. Chris, I hear you on that buddy. I just got out of the academy and I am intensely training right now. This money crap is not fun. I really do appreciate all of the advice so far.
Open an account on e-bay, hit the rummage sales and make some money that way. It's not like a structured job where you have to be there.
This is true and pretty easy as well. But some things to consider are gas mileage, wear on your car, area you live in(rural/ city) you don't want to be driving 15 miles a delivery, conflicting hours with other jobs.(best delivery time is dinner time and weekends). I did this for a while after high school and many friends did as well but I had to be willing to work those prime hours...it's just like waiting tables or tending bar sure you can make $150 working a double on Tuesday but you can make $150 in 3 hours on Friday & Saturday. I gave it up for working at a place called Knells Ridge Car Wash , no driving and they payed minimum wage plus tips which meant an easy $400 per weekend(Sat & Sun)...unless it rained. I liked these jobs and didn't mind working them. I bartended on the side from Nov. 2007 to Oct. 2011 and it served it's purpose but it could wear me down. An important thing to consider is your primary job is difficult and dangerous so don't work something that can cause you to be not on "top of your game" so to speak. I work on Cranes and some really big ones at that and I ended up deciding I couldn't do both jobs safely. Yes we could probably still use the money but getting off at 2 or 3 a.m. and going to work on cranes at 7 a.m. was too risky and not really what I signed up for (when I started working there they stayed open til 10 and 11 on weekends). Just something to consider, good luck.
You wanted a reason not to get back into this...... http://forums.bowhunting.com/showth...-that-ring-from-Lord-of-the-Rings-again...... Looks like you found your answer. Like Brad said, can you get by with cutting some things. I can tell you, it sucks, but cutting saves you one thing that you will never get back by working more......time. Time with family specifically.
Brett, a friend of mine is also a police officer and he has a side job working for a Kohl's. He does security and brings a considerable amount considering all he does is sit in an office and watch a bunch of cameras. If he finds someone pn cam stealing, he goes after them. Its rare he has to do anything though. I can't say exactly how much he makes but, I will say it is above double minimum wage. Its something to look into. Maybe not Kohl's but, other department stores do the same things. I know a guy who worked his way through college doing something very similar at a Walmart also.
Typically people starting out in loss prevention don't make very good money. Once you become a manager then the coin starts rolling in. Not saying it's a bad option but I would not expect a very good starting wage.
A friend makes Pressure Treated Picnic Tables and Doghouses and sells them from his yard. They kind of sell themselves.
