Just depends on how you look at it, had it been a piebald some would consider it a trophy.

And the hard way too, killing it with a shovel thats traditional as your gonna get.

Self defense or crop damage either way she's gonna do hard time.:busted:

Have you ever really tried to keep deer out of your yard? Nothing really works (other than 8' high fencing). They're destructive and eat $$$$ worth of trees and plants. I wouldn't take a shovel to one, but I can understand her mindset. At her age, she's just not putting up with that sh... er, stuff anymore.

Anyhow, I think it shouldn't qualify as 'cruelty' but rather killing a deer out of season without a permit.

If it took her three swings, she needs to work on her form. ;)

Hopefully they don't....after all, its just an animal.

How many people do the same to rabbits and other animals that are in their gardens and flowers......lots. Should they get the book thrown at them?

Just to open a can of worms, those that say throw the book at her, are you one of the guys that would shoot a dog that interrupted your hunt?

no i wouldnt but it would piss me off to no ends.
but beating a fawn too death...that is kinda overboard IMO. no matter how much you dont like the deer in your garden. and the fact she just threw it in a cardboard box. at least have the sense to bury it..or even just throw it in the woods.

dont get me wrong i'm not one of those PETA freaks. im just saying why wouldnt she just give it a boot in the butt and send it running.

First my main issue I have with this is the weapon of choice. You can't just take any item you find laying around and whack animals. That is not a legal activity. This is not a humane kill by society’s standards. I think everything being equal I suppose yes if you get caught beating a rabbit multiple times with a shovel it should be punished. If this woman whacked the deer and it ran away that is one thing. After it screamed she whacked it several more times until it was dead. I am a firm believer that you have to make the next guy who is standing there with a shovel ready to hit a deer think about it a little more and have some type of deterrent. If you let her walk you are saying it is okay to kill deer with shovels which by law it is not.

Second, just because other people get away with killing other animals in their garden doesn’t mean this woman should walk. Just because lots of people speed we should let all who people speed get away with it?

Third, I can turn this around also. Remember when the idiots killed those deer in Wisconsin with snowmobiles by running them over? Should they not be punished because they were mealy animals?

Lastly, maybe throw the book at her is a bit much. Initial gut reaction I guess. But it is my opinion this should not acceptable and be punished.

    Old ladies are hardcore.

Not everyone views deer the same as we do. To some they are as much a pest as a roach.

IMO if you live in an area with a lot of deer & still plant $$$ shrubs, you’re the idiot. Because like Christine said, you can’t keep em out unless you have a really high fence.

The law is a really grey area here. Heck we just had a guy blast a bear in his yard that was only passing thru. Said he felt threatened, even though he went outside to shoot it, rather than just staying in his house. No charges were filed against him, which IMO was complete BS.

Here's the video, in her own words. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/crime/2009/07/08/dcl.elderly.fawn.killer.wkyc

I myself know I'm going to have second thoughts about entering the predawn woods this coming season, who knows how many of those killer fawn eyes are watching as we enter their domain.
You can bet I'm casting away that folding knife for something with a fixed blade from here on out.:busted:

yeah she probably should have not killed it but like everyone is saying, think if she did not kill how many time it might come back and eat her stuff or what ever she had.
