On this day (D-Day), June 6, 1944 over 100,000 allied troops hit the beach. 1 in 10 did not make it off the beach. Please take a moment to recognize their sacrifice for this great nation we live in.
Three times as many men died on that beach in a few hours than the entire Iraq conflict over the last 9 years. Just for a perspective. Proud to be an American.
I am mesmerized just by the grand scale of everything in WWII. I am not sure anything like what took place could ever be repeated today. It's really hard to imagine. On that Day – 5,000 ships carrying men and vehicles across the English Channel 800 planes dropping over 13,000 men in parachutes 300 planes dropped bombs on German troops defending the beaches 100,000 Allied troops made it to shore that day.
As am I. Especially D-Day. I've watched a number of documentaries about that day, and I am fascinated, awed, and saddened by the event.
68 years ago, approximately 156,000 allies landed on the beaches of Normandy. The majority of these men were only 18-20 years old. Many of these young men never made it back home. The American Cemetery at Normandy, to me is every bit as awe inspiring as Arlington (although much smaller).
