I bought my first compound bow today and am very pleased so far. It's a bear encounter 50-60lb. I'm new to shooting, though I could handle 50lb fairly well, but the guy at the shop set it to 45lb and said it's still safe. basically it's just to get my form right until I start moving up. Is this deffo safe?

At the lower poundage, 5# below should still be safe. There should still be plenty of thread.

If it were 80# backed off to 75#, it might be unsafe.

And working on form with lower poundage is a good idea.

I have the same bow and you should be fine. You made a wise choice on the Bear Encounter at 50 to 60 lbs. and didn't over bow yourself. I've seen many MACHO men do that time and time again and it's fun to watch them struggle while I shoot 3 or 4 arrows to their 1 shot. It's a sweet shooter and bow for the money and very well built like all the Bear bows. The Encounter out shot, at least for me, the other much more expensive bows by different makers and I love mine! It's very quite and accurate with a nice solid back wall and no vibration. 50lbs is more then enough for hunting with good shot placement and all you really need. Take your time working up to 60 lbs and concentrate on your 3 point anchor, grip, stance and draw arm form. Increase your poundage little by little turning the limbs in a half a turn. If you can shoot 12 arrows every day you will surprise yourself at how fast your skills improve and how much easier the bow becomes to pull.
