Why do crossbow hunters talk about how easy compound bows are? If they are truly so easy to hunt animals with why do they use something that is inherently easier to use?

Look, I am not beating the compounds are hard drum... it just looks dumb for someone to talk about how easy compounds are when that person chooses to take an easier path with the crossbow.

    Crossbows.
Haha and you thought you would get through this thread without my opinion of youthful ignorance.

I think we are missing the bigger picture here. All these parameters we put on ourselves and other hunters are essentially worthless. I think it ultimately boils down to the whole “hunters tearing other hunters down”concept that not all people can seem to grasp. I think the only need for any crossbow discussion whatsoever is when it comes down to a legal matter of whether to allow them within the archery season.

However it seems that sometimes we forget the most blatant truth: we all just love to hunt. That’s what it’s about. The hunt, and the thrill of it. That’s why all of us are even on this forum. What difference does it make. I’d like to think that my opinion on crossbows is just a modified and slightly more involved “to each their own” argument. I’m not pro-crossbow, I’m not pro-compound, or even pro-tradbow. I’m pro-hunt, pro-hunting, pro-hunters.

What gives any one of us the right to tear another hunter down for their weapon choice? It’s their weapon, Not yours.

Let’s get something straight here. Crossbows aren’t guns. They aren’t even “Crossguns”. They’re crossBOWS. That in itself Is enough to push aside the whole what season argument. It’s legally archery. They shoot arrows. Get over it. You don’t hear the trad bow guys bashing the hell out of a compound shooter for being in “their”season. Wow, pope and young doesn’t consider it archery? Good for them. They’re an individual group that has a long established delineation of their archery definition. I’m a member of pope and young. I actually agree with their definition of permissible archery for that club. Why? Because those are the rules.

It is apparent that the step from traditional bows to compounds is far greater than from the modern compound to a crossbow. Bowhunters are becoming this nit picky group of elitists and it’s just ridiculous. Especially when we are sporting rangefinders, lighted nocks, garmin xero’s and all sorts of fancy gadgets that were never a part of “old archery”.

We as hunters are too competitive and analytical. Tearing people down for one type of game animal they choose to shoot but not another, simply because it is one you also hunt is the exact same problem that is occurring in the crossbow debate. “Oh I don’t shoot crossbows or kill giraffes so therefore both of those are wrong, but killing a whitetail with a modern compound is completely acceptable”. Really?

This mindset is a plague. Be happy for others. Like their trophy photos. Hunt with your respective weapon and respect their choice as well. Hunt for the fun of hunting rather than this braveheart mentality. I hate to break it to you, but your 2018 Hoyt rx-1 turbo is not equivalent to an Indian stick bow. In fact, it’s far closer to that crossbow that you are so quick to rip apart. Your brand new HHA kingpin is not that much more primal than the scope of a crossbow. We’re on the same team. On giant peta hating team. Except me I’m dating like the PETA CEO. The smaller divisions are unnecessarily and hindering. Whether one shoots a giraffe with a crossbow or a whitetail with a spear and loincloth, we shouldn’t care. It’s a broken mentality, and until we fix it we will continue to further the rifts between those who simply should be enjoying the passion for the thrill of hunting that they ultimately share.

I think I might have a logical reason for spear vs. trad., trad vs. compound, compound vs. crossgun? I think the whole reason we all get offended by another weapon inserted into the archery season is this. a hunter doesn't like more hunters in the area he hunts. not one hunter I know likes it when another guy moves in on him, no matter the weapon of choice. each time they let a new weapon in the previous weapon was frustrated. so, I call hypocrite when guys say we need more hunters and we are all on the same team. blaming it on a weapon or its user might not be the right answer? every hunter dreams of having their own honey hole with no competition. if I am wrong then take down all the posted signs and let guys hunt everywhere. heck we all could go hunt the drury's farm. soon the crossgunners will be mad that they let the next weapon in. someday it will become one season "hunting season". heck in PA they have gun seasons in archery already. I was just trying to figure out a deeper reason than weapon vs. weapon. I thought there had to be a bigger reason why guys are mad about crossgunners and trad are mad about compound. not one of us are jumping up and down cheering for more guys hunting in the same areas creating more pressure. I bet each time a hunter walks in on you not one good thought goes through your mind no matter what weapon is in your hand. now you guys can tear me up! lol

I know you’ve had many encounters with the Elmer Fudd cross-gunners stalking their prey.

I do understand your point of view, I truly do.

Sorry, but the difference between a crossbow and a compound bow, or longbow is huge. It's like trying to compare holding a rifle against your shoulder and on a rest, compared to holding a pistol with one outstretched hand. Which is easier and more accurate?

You make compounds sound so easy to shoot and master, I wouldn't have thought that mattered.

I too have shoulder issues. I have been mostly shooting a 50 pound draw weight Halon this summer rather than the 60 pound RX-1 I got this year.

    Thank you for your service.

    These threads crack me up.

Let's all stick to the KISS theory: Keep it simple stupid.

    Shut up and hunt.

I don't believe it's a case of crossbow hunters calling out compound hunters, it's a case of them having to constantly defend their position. It's the anti-crossbow compound hunters who frequently bring up the ease of shooting a crossbow as one of the main reasons they are against it. So a natural defense is to compare the ease of shooting both weapons.

There's a whole litany of reasons - many of which were touched on in the original article which was the subject of this post.

    ^^This exactly.

I started shooting a bow when I was 8 years old. I'm 41 now. Up until last year I was shooting a compound. I was sick of being in pain everytime I drew my bow back, as well as being in pain climbing into a tree stand, or setting one up.

I figured I had paid my dues. So I swallowed my pride, made the switch for the benefit of my health and enjoyment of the hunt.

We are talking about MODERN compound bows Vs. Crossbows. No one is comparing Crossbows to Longbows. You can't even compare modern equipment to traditional equipment.

I disagree. The laws of physics and/or ergonomics disagree with this statement as well.

One of the main problems many people bring up on this site is the falling number of hunters. By allowing crossbows in archery seasons, that definitely opens more opportunities for people to extend their seasons and hunt more. So for those who are anti crossbow during archery season, if it were proven that crossbow hunting directly correlates to more people hunting overall, would that change your mind?

Just to clarify, I do not know of any statistics of how many hunters are added or lost due to crossbows being allowed in archery season. I’m just stating if it was known that this directly caused more hunters in the woods, would you say it benefitted the hunting community?

I can always tell when hunting season is just around the corner. *checks every thread. People are arguing in every one.* hunting season must be soon.
