I am blessed to be able to hunt two states. My home state you cant use a crossbow unless you have a medical reason. In the other state where the family farm is you can use a crossbow. My cousin who is in a terrible accident in 1999 who was a bow hunter. Being able to hunt again during the bow hunt literally saved his life. So about 4 years ago he was getting a new crossbow. So I thought I would buy the same one he was getting minus the crank. Anyway they are a lot of fun to shoot. Me and him compare notes and different ideas on what shoots good and what we could do better. I take it out to the family farm and use it to hunt with him. There are a lot of misconceptions about crossbows. They are easier I think for stand hunting, for spot and stalk I would rather use my bow. I'm getting older, my eyesight isn't near what it use to be and my arthritis isn't getting any better. I have fun with both and just enjoy the hunt.

I've always been hunter #1, I have never practiced much earlier than a month before the season opener. I like to hunt, not shoot my bow. And my shooting come hunting season is just fine.
All of us will be hunter #3 sooner or later, I became #3 a couple years ago and will be hunting with a 50lb bow this fall because of bum shoulders.
But I will never use a crossbow during archery season, legal or not. It is not archery.

Except by definition of law, it actually is considered archery in many places. Never say never. I type this with two broken wrists and will most definitely hunt our archery season this year with a crossbow, because I can and it will keep me in the woods.

    Not to stir the pot.....BUT.......

Do archers using MODERN compound bows think they are that talented? That they are so far seperated from crossbow users? I'm sorry but it does not take talent or skill with todays modern compound bows. I think most archers today using modern equipment are giving themselves too much credit.

The saying, "any deer with a bow is a trophy or an accomplishment." does not apply to modern compound bow users. 30 years ago? YES. Today? NO.

Modern compound bows are one step below crossbows.

The only big difference is you have to draw a bow back. I see why you are all now better then crossbow users, you should be so proud of yourselves for having the skill to draw a bow back. I only wish I was as talented.

How dare I enter the woods in the presence of such greatness?

You use mechanical releases with TRIGGERS. Again I see where your talent makes you king of bait pile/the woods/food plot with this one.

Do you really need to practice with a modern compound bow year round? the muscle memory arguement, yes i understand it. I would put my bow away at the end of the season and pick it up again in the summer and have to practice a bit. But seriously, you're giving yourselves to much credit.

My wife who had never shot a bow before in her life, went to BPS and got a modern compound bow. within 15 minutes she was getting 2" groupings at 20 yards. At our house she was getting better with every shot. She looked at me and said, "why do you need to practice so much?"
She stopped shooting for a week then she went back out, with the same result.

When my son was twelve it was the same scenerio.

I am a blessed man to have so much talent in my family apparently.

When I switched to a crossbow I asked the guy how long on average does it take a first time user to sight in a crossbow here? he said, "10-15 minutes." I said, how bout a first time compound user? He said, "20-30 minutes at 20 yards."

As far as I'm concerned, there is not a real arguable difference. You sound foolish. Get over it, and most importantly GET OVER YOURSELF!! You are not that special, or better, or king of the bait pile/woods/food plot if you use a modern compound bow. You are one step from a crossbow.

Unfortunately I reluctantly agree with this. A lot of truth there joe. Lots of compound hunters get on a high horse type of deal.

How old does my compound have to be before I am special? Asking for a friend...

If you want to see a real difference in difficulty, use a traditional bow. No place for the faint of heart. Lol. Trad hunting humbled me quick.

The hearing impaired should be on that list, but I choose to use a "vertical" bow despite the advantage it gives to the animal in my case.

Having severe deafness in my left ear, I can't tell the direction of sound worth a toot. LOL. Sometimes, my best opportunity to come to full draw is spent looking in the wrong direction, or simply staying immobile for fear the animal is already on alert as he comes into a shooting lane.

crossgun hunting I believe is just a fad that will likely pass with time. once the lazy hunters realize you have to be a woodsman first and foremost they will give it up. then all that will be left are the guys that grew up with vertical bows that can no longer use one and have to go crossgun. I have already noticed a slight drop of the crossgunners I know. they went out with the impression they were using a gun. little did they know you had to know how to hunt to be successful. when nobody is pushing deer to to you it changes the strategy.

I know guys that use a crossbow hunt and guys that use a bow to hunt and they fall into all or some of those categories, not happy at all with them.

    Truth.

You could put the same article in a trad magazine and change title to 5 reasons you may want to shoot a compound this year and everything said would be applicable.
