I'm in the market for a new truck. I made up my mind on getting a Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Crew Cab. My question has to do with the rear differential. I can get a new 2010 cheaper but in the SR5 package it has a Automatic Limited Slip Differential. The TRD package has a Seperate Locking Differential (among other options) but that package will cost me a couple grand more. My main question has to do with the differentials. I will not use this truck to go mudding or off roading. Mostly normal hunting and pulling a snowmobile trailer thru the WI snow. Is it worth it to get the more expensive package in relation of the different differentials?
I've got an older tundra and I bought my son an older tacoma (both xtra cab - TRD's). I didn't know there was a difference in the differential. I thought the main diff. was the suspension. Got me.
If you are not doing any off roading or heavy playing the LSD will be just fine. The SLD is more of their offroad racing 4x4 package.
No, you do not necessarily warrant the need for the OR Locker. I have an 05 OR with the locker of course, and have used it a few times, but I didn't seek out this package specifically, it just happened to be the right price truck with the tow package (that I did want). All 09+ Tacomas come with an AutoLSD (even the OR), called TRAC. It operates in 2WD and 4H, while the locker (if equipped) runs only in 4L (unless you do the locker mod). Obviously it's fine (and I would say better) for daily driving in bad weather since it is active at normal driving speeds and in 2WD and 4wd, while the locker can only be used at low speeds in 4L. Basically, it transfers power to the wheel that's not spinning by either controlling the speed of the spinning wheel or stopping it all together. You CAN turn TRAC off, however, and run your truck open front and back if you want (burnouts, I suppose:D). With TRAC and VSC, you will be fine in everyday driving, and even inclement weather (VSC uses your ABS to keep your vehicle tracking straight to prevent slide out). One other thing to consider. The SR5 seats are different than the TRD seats. I find the TRD seats to be much more comfortable than those of the SR5, but some don't. You might want to get some seat time in both to better make your decision.
Yea with the limited slip diff. you will be fine. Once your gripper tire slips the other will kick in and help.
