Well I had the good fortune to go out with a friend of mine hunting this afternoon (forum member Florida Marine). Within 5 minutes on stand I had seen a spike and a doe, followed by a 3 pointer within 10 yards and hour later. I passed the shot. About 30 minutes before sundown a doe came in to my set-up. She was painting hard and just stood in the saddle for 5 minutes before moving. It took her 10 minutes to give me a great 10 yard broadside shot. I was "calm" and I told myself to aim small and hit.....I shot right over her back! My goodness. She bound off 20 yards and stood there for 10 minutes. For the next 10 minutes I told myself I am done for the year with my recurve. I am a pretty good first year shooter but evidently not good enough to be trying my skills out on game that deserve more from me. It was my third shot and third miss of the season.....

BUT, thank god she turned and started walking to get me another shot right above a steep drop off ( I was hunting a high ground rim). Without thinking and without thought I pulled and launched an arrow as she stopped at 15 yards...HIT. Down she went and started thrashing on the ground. I nocked another arrow and launched...hit! Dead deer.

I am SO happy right now. But to be honest I am not sure if I can finish out the season with my recurve because my confidence is shot and to be honest I am not that good with it. In practice I am above average for my time shooting (less than 8 months) but I am not good enough in the deer woods like guys like Schultzy and GMMAT. I will think about it over the next couple of days while I ENJOY my blessings in the form of a recurve doe!

That is awesome. Congrats on your first Trad. style kill.

I hope to one day take one with my dad's old recurve, but for now I'll stick to the compound.

Awesome!! That has to be a good feeling! In all honesty, I wouldn't have stuck it out as long as you have. I would have had the compound in my hands after the second miss. Good luck the rest of the season no matter which weapon of choice you choose.

Congrats on your first trad. kill.

Hopefully you get the rest worked out, maybe you just needed to get this first notch in the belt. There is no greater pressure than the first.

    Brett,

I can't tell you how happy it made me when you texted me. It really lifted my spirits. I wanted so bad to keep pace with you tonight but to no avail. Congrats again.

Cool stuff Brett. Congrats. Don't kid yourself, there are guys out there with compounds that are worst shots than you. Keep at it. Really happy to see this thread. Congrats again.

BOOM...this is the thread I have ben waiting on. Way to get it done brother. It was just a short while ago that you posted you were going at it all or nothing with the stick and string. Now today all the hard work and preparation paid off. Great job Brett. I noticed that smile tonight is bigger than the one you had when you killed your big buck last year.

Your not the only one Ben!! All I gotta say though Brett Is WHERE WAS MY TEXT????????????

One other thing- Years ago a friend of my dads missed the 1st 10 or so shots he took at deer with his longbow. He then came to a point where he could hit them but still wasn't hitting them right. Just like that something clicked with this guy and the switch has been on ever since. Hang your head high Brett. This stuff Isn't easy and the switch will turn on, hell... maybe It just did. What you did today Is something not many people on this forum have done. A big congratulation's to you my friend!!!
