hello I am having trouble on making my mind up on 3 pin or 5 pin and what yardage for each pin was wondering what everyone else was shooting thank you in advance
For hunting I've been using a 3 pin for about 10 years. high pin is 0-25, middle is 30 and lowest (in sight picture) is 35 yards. Here's why, 35 yards is the furthest I'll take a shot in extreme weather such as rain, as I know I can split a hair at that range. I know my hold over for a 40 yard shot if weather allows(not windy etc), so I'm confident with my set up. Any more pins than that and my hunting sight picture gets too cluttered and blocked out. Only my opinion and everyone's set up's are different for their style of hunting. I mostly hunt from treestands for white tails. In a target situation one pin on an adjustable sight is the best way to be competitive in my opinion.
I'm in the 20, 30, 40, 50 & 60 yard camp. Practice all the way but have never shot at an animal past 35 yards.
I use a 5 pin just like everyone else with the 20 - 60. But I really wanna try an adjustable single pin.
Last two sites I have bought are actually 4 pin sites... Seemed like 3 wasn't enough and 5 sometimes cluttered things when hunting - though both 3 and 5 are fine, its just a matter of what you get used to... I generally have my four pins set at 20, 30 , 40 , 50 or 55
3 pins- 20,35, and 50. I had a 5 pin but they were to close together on my Z7. So I switched to 3....
I have a 4 pin: 25, 40, 50, 60 .... That said, I could use a 70 yard for practice. A lot of the yardage depends on your setup. I couldn't use a 20 and 30 yard pins because they're so close together they touch and I couldn't set them.
My last bow had a 5 pin. 20, 30, 40, 50 and 75. I practiced out at 75 with that bow on a regular basis. I could keep it in the vitals on a 3D deer. I would never take that shot on a deer but, man did it make my 20-40yd so much easier. I am torn on what to get for my element. I want a Tru Glo Carbon XS because it is so light It only has 4 pins though but, I would like to try a slider but, I have heard some people say you can barely get 75 out of most of them. I want to be able to practice out to 100yd by the begining of next season. Who knows, I may end up with 2 sights. One 7 pin for practice and a 4 pin for hunting. lol
Stalker, Thanks for posting this. I'm a noob researching accessories for me and my kids bows and had the same question. Thanks to all the seasoned guys for your input. Think i've made up my mind with the 4 pin... the 5 pin looked a bit tight to my eye and I'd like to have one more marker than the 3. I guess the one that feels right is the one! Eric Noob in training
Thanks guys your information has been helpful and b4zz1ng4 you are welcome. I am sure ill have more questions for you guys since i have not bow hunted since i was 15 and i am now 36 and tech stuff moves fast thank you
Let me add his since kids were brought up. I don't have kids that shoot yet but, my wife does. She isn't as into it as I am and she has 3 pins. Thats probably all she will use and probably all a child needs.
I have the trophy Ridge Punisher 5 pin sight. 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. I have the fisrt at 10 because i like to do small game hunts and most rabbits and squirells i take are at 10 of less. I would love to get this 7 pin sight for long range practice!
Thanks, Sticken. Makes sense. I'll probably get the 3 pin for my young'n and the 4 pin for me and my "know it all" teen. lol Thanks again everyone!
