Well I'm getting ready for another day in the tree. Depending on which property I go to will determine wether I bring the recurve or compound. The wind should be good for either property I just have to flip a coin on seeing deer in the morning. The weather report is for wind and rain in the afternoon/evening.
I'll update when I get to my chosen destination.

Weigh in on choice of bow I should take. One property I can use both the other is compound only.

I got here just at first light. I no sooner sit down when I herd a deer snot blowing up the hillside. I thought GREAT I no sooner started and I busted and my morning is over. Well she started down the hill just stomp'n and blow'n but she kept getting closer. Then her 2 yearling came following. She got to within +- 30 yards and saw me in the tree. For the next hour I stood stark still. She back out, come in, back out, come in, all the time snorting and stomping. Then another deer appeared at the too of the hill. I'm now looking at 4 does. Finally as my luck would have it the lead doe had enough and left back up the hill taking the other 3 with her.
As you can see in the picture there is no back cover to be found. I'll sit for awhile more. Maybe that ole mangy fox will come by or perhaps the deer will make a return trip.

Ah, I'm think'n the morning is about done for today. Those 4 doe are the only ones coming through the property. I keep getting the same ones on camera. I'll check the cards again.
Think I'll go get some breakfast, get the truck inspected, play with the dogs and maybe go stump shooting.

    good luck with your hunt.

Just a question. I live in California where we are only allowed 2 tags. I want to do more deer hunting than 2 deer.
How do you "Pick up properties"?

    Are these leases?

My question.....when does your season end up there? Ours ends Jan 31. We have 5 tags we can fill ..... 2 buck and 3 does. Can't wait until Oct gets here, all I can do right now is hog and Turkey.

No, some of my properties are clients that have contacted an organization I belong to that specializes in deer removal. Other properties are either friends or friends of friends.

Va bowbender: When does your season end? I didn't know there were deer seasons in March.

Since you shoot both compound and recurve, I'd like to introduce you to our Tree Stand Bow Holder. It will hold a Long bow , re curve , compound and crossbow on any stand. It can be adjusted without tools while on stand for the days you switch bows.
It keeps the bow from moving in the breeze and is right at your side pointed down towards the deer. Can even climb with the bow in the holder. 2012 Misc 079 (1).jpg

Don't think I could bring myself to a place where I could kill a pregnant doe in March.......not sure I could sleep after that field dressing.

We all have our personal ethics and limitations. We have to be true to them and how they effect our lives.
As for myself I've been a butcher by trade for over 40 years and I most likely view animals in a different light. I will shoot any legal deer that come into range, doe, button buck, mature buck or fawn to me it makes no difference. Deer are a nuisance though not listed as a nuisance species. That's why I hunt them 12 months a year, they cause too much damage in my area.

I've butchered probably 100 deer, numerous kinds of birds, and countless fish. I live in farm country where beef, chicken and pork go from our yards to the BBQ on a regular basis. I've also killed deer of all sizes and age over the last 27 years in the woods.

I don't see what not killing a near term pregnant female has to do with any of that..........or the reasons you gave for that matter.

I know people that view deer as a nuisance and kill them and leave them in piles to rot. Doesn't have anything to do with ethics.

Two things I find comical......when people build houses in the middle of the woods and then ***** about the wildlife being a nuisance  and how amazing it is that I have managed to own 28 acres of land at home and 350 more at our hunting camp both of which are lousy with deer yet miraculously I have never witnessed this horrific damage these locusts do that requires them to be eradicated for their crimes against humanity.

They did eat some leaves off a nice Japanese maple near my house this winter. Maybe I need to buy a bazooka and take 'em all out!!

Good luck but I'm pretty sure I'm jealous of someone being able to hunt this time of year.

Can you say you killed 2 deer with one arrow? Lol.
A property I hunt the deer do thousands of dollars in damage to his crops each year. Makes them a nuisance in his eyes.
