So I finally made it out to public land to scout and I'm pretty confident with what I found so far. We went to three different areas the first of which was very thick and very under developed. It has huge ag fields that haven't been planted and the only food source I found was persimmon trees and an oak here an there. I did however see an early rub going in with noticeable velvet scratched off and many beds throughout. Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
It's kind of odd to see bucks rubbing out of velvet this early around here but the bright side was the sign was there but you would think if they were gonna plant there it would be done already so not the greatest source of food but we can use minerals blocks powders etc u can use corn but can't hunt over it. Another spot we looked is were I can utilize a climber and it is pretty much a whole patch of persimmon trees loaded only down side is these are all subject to flood but looks very promising. Last place we went is planted with milo that will be cut soon and then replanted with winter wheat we bump deer walking in and found very noticeable beds and trails leading inward and outward in various directions bedding on all sides and it boarders the lake. All an all we put some miles down and are pretty confident about the milo fields come season. Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
Two of my plots are looking great! One is all turnips and the other is a winter green mixture! Can't wait to sit over them! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
1st picture is a plot that's almost 2 acres. It wraps around the timber. 2nd one is a little over half an acre. It's right next to a creek with an amazing crossing right by it! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's a heck of a plot! I'm heading to my property in Kentucky Thursday morning. Although the season starts Saturday I decided not to hunt this weekend. I don't have anything patterned and I need to finish up some items I didn't get to. Food is key for early season hunting and as of today I have zero. I sprayed about a 1/2 acre area a few weeks ago and I'll burn it off and throw down some rye and crimson clover. I know it's late but I need to get something established. The rye should get enough growth before the frost and clover should pop up in the spring.
Where about in Kentucky? I am from and hunt every year in Ripley Ohio, right across from Maysville KY. Big Buck country!
Dang that's pretty close! As the crow flies my property is 35 miles away from Ripley. I'm about halfway between Cincinnati and Lexington.
Sounds like we have a couple Ohio hunters on the team. I'm from east central Ohio about an hour east of Columbus. I'll be hunting Guernsey, Muskingum and Coshocton counties. Anybody heading around my area this year? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nice looking Bucks. Also Sburns, good luck. 1 month! Checking Camera's Saturday, will see what we got!
My good buddy hunts the Shawnee National Forest most years with good luck. If I get lucky and tag out early in KY I may join him. I think it's about 2.5 hours form my KY land.
What are your thoughts on the buck in the second picutre, showing as a main frame 8? I believe he has 4" brows with 2" kickers off each. I thought he was one heck of and 8 but my brother seems to think he will only end up at 125. I am undecided on whether he is a 3.5+ or not
I think that's pretty spot on at 125. Maybe low 130s. This is my buck from last year. He scored just shy of 130. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Do you remember what his G2 measurements were? I was thinking this 8 could have 10" G2s, because his rack seemed tall with a big frame... I was hoping mid 135-140 although I know it is hard to reach 140 as an 8.
still haven't gotten out to see what's going on in the woods. Hoping later next week to get out and cut some brush. when does everyone else's season start. Wi is Sept 17.
