Sat last night only saw two does. Had some pics on one of my cams of a pretty good buck fight the night before. Probably check cams on my other property tonight. This weekend is our QDMA youth hunt so I will be busy guiding a youngster who has never been a field. This year they are all sons / daughters of wounded warriors or children who have lost a parent in the war. Always a good time and a real pleasure.
No sir. This hunt is done on a special piece of property owned by Kansas State University and is their Timber management / wildlife management grounds. This weekend is the pre rut antler less season. They invite us in for the youth hunt to harvest does only to help manage the herd.
Very cool for you to assist in that program tacklebox! God bless you man Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Last two hunts have been very unproductive. Going to try and mix it up a little by spot n stalking some Federal land. It's about 1000 acres of of rolling hills - no trees....stepping out of my comfort zone a bit but need to try something different. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Stuck working all weekend again, wishing I was hunting. Any of you guys getting out this weekend? Good luck to those who going out!
Looks like rain again tomorrow...most of the day. Turning off the morning alarm and thinking evening sit only tomorrow, at best. Either that or go for this fergie booner that's showing up out back of my house. Lol.
Very cool. I hunted Thursday and didn't see a deer. Sat until 10 am and then back in the stand at 3 pm until dark. Not a deer for me or my hunting partner. Had a huge coyote under my stand but had no chance for a shot. He came out of nowhere and was passing through. I didn't want to hunt the weekend on public land and 87 degrees all weekend.
Didn't see anything tonight. Very little daytime movement on cameras. Leaving for grouse hunting in northern WI this week so I won't be out deer hunting for a couple weeks probably.
Thanks! Sure was a great time. There is somethin about takin a kid for their first hunt AND being successful. Man I just love it. I have a new lil buddy. No doubt about it I thought he was gonna take the big mature doe but apparently he was on one of the fawns. No matter. He sure couldn't have cared less. Pure awesomeness
All he wanted to know was ...... When could I take him again. Lol Gave him My phone number and promised we would get out again soon and he can watch me do some bowhunting or we will shoot some yotes bunnies whatever.
That second pic he was shoving my homemade deer jerky and summer sausage into his mouth faster than I could hand it to him. Smart young man too. He decided to quiz me. Wanted to know about tyranny and wayward government. My kinda boy
That is awesome, nothing like showing kids the positive, responsible side of the sport. God job, kid looks like he was having a great time.
Thanks I think he genuinely he a blast! I look forward to that weekend all year... In other news starting to get more and more bucks on camera and some sparring, things are starting to heat up and there is a front coming for the weekend with a nice drop in temp. Could be a great weakend.
Nice job! Looks like a blast. I look forward to doing something like this in the future and start giving back to the kids.
I checked my camera on my new property and got my first racked buck on camera Sunday morning. This was the best pic I got of him, but he doesn't look to bad. I got a big doe group living on the property, so my best bet is to catch something during the rut.
Sat in the stand Saturday morning and didn't see anything other than an owl 10 feet from my face...wasn't a pleasant experience. I was about to leave when I noticed antlers on the other side of the river I was sitting next to. So there I sat watching 4 bucks slowly meander westward, 2 of which were shooters that I have pictures of. After they left, I decided to check my food plot to see if the sugar beets were producing a tuber. The entire plot has 1.5 feet of growth on it so I don't think the deer are paying much attention to it (clover, sugar beets, and brassicas). The rancher that owns the land planted some of the sugar beets along the headlands of his pasture and they have a softball size beet growing. After seeing this, I decided to hang a stand alongside the edge of the pasture where I have seen some activity in the past. A good frost is expected Thursday night so I'll be sitting there then as well as Friday morning. Mmmm backstraps
For the third week in a row we had rain. Mid Sat, I saw a break as this front looked like it was going to swirl by. I loaded the car and made my run. I hunt SSE of this Marker but it's the closest, um, I'll call it a town. Just arriving before what looked like it would be a break in the weather. I put on the rain suit thinking I'd sneak in quietly, hand the stand and be still just add the rain stopped around 4:15. Got up in the tree, lost my hook on the way in. I improvised. The rain let up but didn't stop. About 6:15, I figured, what the heck. Pulled the old Primos deer can out and gave it a couple of bleats. About 30 seconds later I see movement, up wind and ahead of me about 15-20yds. Greyish fall coat...figured it was a doe but couldn't see its head. Now it's thick, really thick, burned out a few years back over grown with sweet gum and some oaks. I mean THICK. Here is a pic from about 45' away from a few weeks back. I'm looking back toward me. I'm sitting on the left side of this pic looking back toward the right of this pic. Got the bow already in my hand as it was part of the improve having lost the hook. Slowly stood up hoping to have a small window at vials. Where did it go? In 15 seconds I lost it. Crap. It worked before, a few more bleats. A snort wheeze to my left, up that run what a figured was about 50yds. That was Saturday. Well with 3 squirrel sightings. Got back to the car drenched. Peeled of all the wet clothes and fortunately had dry clothes in the car. I have a cold now, a couple of pics and am back or of town on a business trip. Bleah!
