Good to see a few deer posted, good job fellas. My weekend warp up: Woke up at 1am and could not go back to sleep Saturday morning. I made breakfast, did dishes, pooped, and cleaned until I got bored and went to stand at 0330. As the sun finally made its way up the excitement started back in. I saw turkeys that were roosted close to me fly down in to the field, which was cool. Two does strolled past about 40+ yards, I let them walk. One of the fawns came by at 10 yards, but they are on the no kill list, so she also got a pass and still had some spots on her butt. It started getting warm and the lack of sleep was catching up to me to a point where I was falling asleep standing up. Packed up and went to take a quick nap. Went back out at 1630 and only had the momma and other fawn come in. Momma winded me, did not spook, but knew something was not right; they went behind me and hung out for a while. Sunday was a bust; I did not see a dang thing. I am glad the doe stuck her nose up and gave me an idea that my new scent control technique did not work. I am going back to smoking my gear (heavily) and putting pine tree branches in the box. I tried the scent wafers this and am going to through them out, personally, I do not like them. Weather is going to drop under 50 this coming weekend, last time the temp dropped the deer were much more active during the day.
I've been seriously thinking about smoking my clothes for a couple years now. Do you have a lot of success with it?
Good job TJ! We're you able to get your kids out and shoot anything? Are you liking these new property's better than your old one
My kids didn't hunt this weekend, one was sick and the other busy doing girly stuff lol. Umm, my old place was pretty special to me and I still miss it a bit, but can't complain. Pretty happy with the new places.
I did it last year and it worked great. I had three does come dead down wind of me and stop right nuder my stand and never busted me. Wind was about 15Mph. They would walk past me with the wind heading right to them and never stopped them. We have a lot of tobacco barns fired up this time of year so i think that helps. I think it works and it give me confidence in my scent control.
How do you do it? I was just going to have a camp fire in my back yard and sit in the smoke with my hunting clothes on and drink a beer.
Well I procrastinated too long and missed out on a doe tag. Both counties I hunt in are sold out of antlerless tags. Sorry guys, I guess I'll just have to make it up with a 200 incher.
I saw those pics and thought you were going to make us wait a couple days for the details. :D Good work on the doe!
I set up a ground blind in the rain yesterday, hope to get my 4 year old son out one of these nights. He keeps nagging me to go, but I doubt he will last more than an hour in the blind. I foresee us being surrounded by deer and him squeeling loud enough for the entire county to hear...wish me luck!
Next year you might want to try it before the season. Aim for a bit longer sit to build up some increasing stamina and guage for the lengths of sits for the season. Pack a meal or snack. 25+ yrs after my last hunt with my Dad I can still recall the staples of our hunts including pepperoni, cheese, tangerines, tootsie rolls and a thermos of coffee. I'll just say my diet and scent control has evolved...but, memories...
Opening day tomorrow! Won't be able to get out til Saturday. Sure feels like Fall though. Temps were in the low 40s on my way into work this morning and I saw two fresh deer kills on the road and several deer out in the fields so they definitely started moving with this cold front.
Well I just settled on my new to me home. I got 3 acres of mostly thick woods surrounded with farm land on one side. Put out a camera tonight to see what is lurking on the property. Found some deer signs and a good trail cutting through the back of the property. I will post some pics if I get anything good on the cam
