Who’s headed out for elk this fall? Season is right around the corner. Heading out to Colorado with a couple young guys on their first elk hunt. Should be a fun year.
Appreciate it. A buddy from work and I both drew it. We have a major exercise I can’t get out of the second half of the season but I am going in 2 days early to find the herds and try to get on them day 1 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Have a buddy that was a biologist in the area, his advice is find water. I personally have not hunted that unit, but know a few who have. Thanks for your service. Maneuvers can definitely mess up hunt plans. Four years with Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children at Pendleton.
Yep I have 4 years left and i will be done. No more hunts messed up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That’s the plan is to find water. I have found most of them scouring e scouting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Congrats and good luck Jessie. Water will be good, but also find a few good PJ stands, especially on N or NE faces and you may find them being. Most important, be mindful of wind/thermals. You got my number of you need someone to bounce any ideas off.
First time for me this year. Doing the OTC thing in Colorado. I've been shooting a ton, hiking with the loaded pack and trying to buy any last minute things. Can't wait!
Fwiw The elevation in CO will be a wake up call. Make sure you're getting in some cardio, you can't be in good enough shape. Seldom have I ever run into an elk near a major trail, so any offtrail pack hikes you can add in may also be helpful.
Yep we have already been out to scout. The unit is one of the top units if it gets a lot of rain and they got hammered this year with rain. New moon right at the beginning. We are super excited. Have either sex tag. First day or 2 will be bull only hunting, after that I will shoot whatever is in range. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thank you! I have been running and mountain biking along with weighted hiking as much as I can. Last year, a friend and I did the Triple Bypass ride in CO and yes, things got wonky for me over 10k.
It's been hot and dry out here, but we are heading into that time of year when Colorado receives afternoon thunder showers. Elk do need to drink. However, elk hate heat. Find cool and moist spot on the north side of any mountain where natural evaporative cooling takes place and you with find elk. Antler growth is looking good! I am in for deer, elk, and bear in GMU 48.
Have to say, hope it stays dry. Have some waypoints that are good springs. Like sitting those in the afternoon and evening.
I got 16e this year in New Mexico. They have been slammed with water and the biologist said antler growth has been incredible this year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Woke up this morning wondering where the heck my water filter is at! We’re heading out around noon on Friday, should be setting up camp Saturday morning!
Same for me. Just about everything is packed. Can’t wait! Good luck to you Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
