It is said that when a buck is injured, it's body will send nutrients to the injury rather than to antler growth on the opposite side of the injury.
So, if their right rear leg is injured, the left side antler will not receive the nutrients it needs and will grow in very wonky.

A guy I used to work with shot a bull elk like that several years ago. It had this dark, dead looking antler on its left side that just grew out and down the side of its head. When they skinned it out, they found that it had an injury on its back right leg, the knee was twice the size it should have been and was locked in place from all the scar tissue around it.

Hopefully be out tomorrow somewhere. Will be a half hearted shed hunt, with some scouting mixed in. Got to put in more effort this year. It showed this past season with my hunting performance.

And another big deadhead. At this point I'm going to run out of deer to chase next year. Just a heavy rack 9 pt, has 2 kicker pts on left side base. 20230219_152023.jpg

Edit: He has the largest mass measurements on any deer I have found. He beat out my monster 9 pt I found a few years ago. His left base is 6 1/2" and right base is 5 1/2". I know it doesn't show well in pic, but he is massive!

The bigger of the two I found today was a match to one I found last year, they weren’t 20 yds apart and I didn’t see it or it dropped later.

That always messes with me. Then I start wondering how many I miss. Quite a few times I have gone back to a spot the next week and found more sheds that were old and there the whole time. Good find! Is that buck still alive? If so how he look this year?

I went back 2x after I found that one last year to try and match it up and couldn’t find it, I don’t know if he made it or not, this lil spot is only 28 acres and butts up to neighborhood and a major highway. I have permission but never hunted it or hung cams, I have killed a lot of fox off it tho. I’m def gonna hang some cams up this spring.

Found matching set at the farm. Buck my uncle shot and hit low. Glad he made it. Other than these one small one my buddy found. Hit another public spot and 3 of us walked 8 miles. One spike dead head was all and it was way too nasty to deal with. Bucks still holding here. 5BF7315B-5B40-440F-A5D2-DC0A65C02D12.jpeg

I saw a recent study. Some university (maybe down in texas)? did where they had a certain area maybe few thousand acres?? It was all enclosed so they knew the number of bucks. They had people search for the sheds and still were only able to find i think 5% if my memory serves me correct. Blew me away I thought at least half would be findable.

Also found a dead head. Guessing he got hit by a train cause he was about 100 yards away from railroad. Always end up finding a couple dead deer cause of the trains.

I got out again today. No sheds but did find a really old dead head. I left it and didn't even take a pic. I should have took a pic, it was unique. 4 pt on one side and a large spike on the other.

Found a big 3 side today, I heard there was a big 7 in the spot but never saw em. I’m trying to match it up, went 5 miles and just the one side. 11 1/8” G2
