Oh went to daughters today...WOW it's bad, hills on both sides all the way down. Entire ridge lines and huge swaths of hill side brown....trees completely leafless. Skeletons lining the expressway.

Well last night I harrow dragged the upper plots I had disced. Picked more rocks,so many rocks. This morning I went in and cut several large maple that were shading the laneway plot. I got all but one cut and cleaned up. One got hung up on another maple and just would not be winch down. So I'll need to rig it and get the tractor to pull it down . This will stall me yet again because it is across the plot making going through dangerous. In now cooling down and hydrating before going to lower plot to harrow drag in corn and sorghum . No it's not too late for corn and hopefully I've gotten past the worst of .ground wire worms ,grubs and other pest. I am trying to beat a week of rain coming in starting at 1 pm it's so hot out there.

So back in..May be on verge of heat stroke queasy and massive headache, eyes hurt or rather burn as well.
Rain held off and it is now clouding over. I did an experiment with the seed corn and old grain sorghum. I planted a 5 ft strip the entire length of lane way and a round at the end with clovers left in middle. What I did was go over it with the sorghum heavy then the corn heavy. Either one grows well or the other. If both do well ooppss it will end up growing short or kill it's self out . I have to battle the rocks the birds the raccoons.
When I got out of the laneway I opened up the area I planted then went to the other side of field and did another small plot the same way. I left two plots unplanted. The front field WIld life sorghum which should be a much shorter sorghum. This may also get soybeans or cowpeas..I have pics on phone will post later. Got to eat lunch.

Oh so you know, what I'm dealing with. This is after 10 yrs of de-rocking. I have literally run out of places to put the rocks. Just piles and piles all along the field edge.

I'll bring a trailer if you wanna load it up. Those are perfect for filling in laneway ruts

BTW...That dang drag is HEAVY!!!! It's and expensive heavy duty one and has two drags and the drag bar...lifting those sections 3 1/2 ft to get them into the Gator bed is getting tough for this old lady...Lol

So beans are in all the upper plots...It's a mix of cow peas and soybeans . Peas can handle some shade so I dropped the mix in the semi shade areas. I'm not looking for grain just attraction.. I have lots of beans leftover because I decided to keep some of the white clover that's doing so well. Now I'm going to keep the wild life sorghum for next year and plant that area in beans that won't hold over.. I am going to put some sorghum in with them for cow peas to climb. In for lunch. And cool down 92 and planting is tough. Took all night to lose yesterday's headache.I do not want a repeat.

I made it with perfect timing. I went down and planted the last two prepared plots with cow pea a n d leftover soybeans. I then took and spread just a little wildlife sorghum in them as well. Draged everything in and then drove over it to pack. Got back here and put everything away and the storm rolled in. So far lots of noise but not much rain yet. The forecast is calling for rain every day for the next 7 days....aaahhh now it's steady.

Gental soakers one after the other. Lightening has the air filled with ozone. Very little breeze,so we can keep the Windows open. Temps are coming down a bit so hopefully the house will cool. Tough living with someone that HATES air conditioning.

Not even 24 hrs and the seed is sprouting. Problem is the rain uncovered much of it and my property looks like a zoo aviary. So today's storm is late ,let's hope enough seed got buried to make the plots viable.... crows are out there loudly calling all their friends. Though history tells me even if they are on top of soil they will send out roots.
I'm a bit surprised about how many plopped up because I had done a very deep disc and I had more fears of too deep than too shallow.

A little update on my plots, overseeded some bare spots, fertilized my screening and newly planted clover/chicory.

Things are looking real good here in Ohio.

Took a walk between storms...Rain woke me last night. So 2 days in and I know I have a good source for my feed corn plantings again. The beans are really sitting on top but not hit as bad as I expected. Corn was hit hard but sorghum not. On top of soil or not, fastest germination I've seen. Here's the thing about the corn and grain sorghum. Even though,as you can see deer are eating the beans as well as corn and the birds have hit corn hard. It cost me around 10.00 for corn and the sorghum was found in basement and many years old. I consider it free. Fertilizer will be 14.00 a bag because I bought it a while ago. 20210701_100352.jpg 20210701_095538.jpg 20210701_094405.jpg 20210701_094402.jpg 20210701_093826.jpg 20210701_084642.jpg

I see the turnip seed didn't make it in that post. So here and peaches and clover.
