Finally made it back up to the property, put up a few stands, checked camera’s and looked at the plots. Some of them look OK at best, others look like crap. We need rain so bad some of the trees are already changing...
I never gave Food plots that much thought, until July and I thought we were DITW (Dead in the Woods). Until I found 'Whitetail Habitat Solutions" on Y**T*be... In a matter of a couple of weeks I have learned more about food plots from Jeff Sturgis. Jeff graciously answered my questions I send via email. Now he didn't give away the bank. Developing and maintaining a whitetail herd is his business. watching his videos has taught me August and early September you can Start a fall forage. The advantage of late summer / Autumn, our plants won't be competing as hard with the weeds... Our Plot locating is wooded (90% White Oak) and the A'kern (acorn) are beginning to fall. The soil is rich; and makes a lot of this easier. This will be a no-till plotting area. The wildlife has readily available water source. So creating a drinking fountain for them won't be necessary. I make no promises. except, learning how to establish and maintaining a food plot in the hope of fostering a small health herd of Whitetail. Doing all this with my daughter....is worth it We still have to clear several saplings... felling trees is always fun
The main land project I had this season was getting more water on my land. I installed three wildlife ponds with synthetic liners. with the rain hey filled up in a couple of weeks and are ready to rock now. Will have to take some pics now that they are full for you. Deer are pounding them already! Pictures below are just from one of the three For comparison here is one I did a few years ago.
Went down to the lime stone plot to pick rocks after discing yesterday. How I have any disc left is beyond me I made a whole bunch of stone. Just chopped up the lime stone. They should be fracking here.
Follow up...what smarting yourself will do....but, it will also make you feel like the dumb guy in the room. My Natural water way...Marsh land could be trouble... and I may have to, next May /June add a drinking fountain. we shall see. Again. this is my first ever food plot. So, is really is a shot in the dark this fall Forage
I may have to do this! I know of a perfect spot that’s spring fed. (Gears turning, rust flaking off in brain)
Made it back up to the woods, put up a few more stands. I’ve seen walking sticks before but never on the trees I am putting a stands in, There were 3 on each tree. Here’s a couple pictures , kinda cool.
Implemented plan B this morning. Our extreme drought and heat wiped out all my brassica plots. I replanted it all in oats. FINALLY a decent shot at good rains coming and much cooler temps.
Rain! Thank God. Hope it didn't come to late for the seed I broadcasted 8 days ago. Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk
Hey all! My wife and I bought a new house last November and remodeling projects are winding down…started clearing the back end of our property. I plan to put in a good plot of winter oats and clover and add in a few chestnut and persimmons trees! Here’s the progress so far. Still a ways to go and won’t be ready until next season but, I’m excited the process has started!
Brassica, winter wheat, and radishes. What do you think? And I looked again, it's actually been 10 days. Heavy rains tonight and some the next few days. Sure wish the weatherman wouldn't have screwed me, but here we are. Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk
Well, there was a really good chance for rain today said the weatherman…… It’s what I’ve been waiting for So I planted the last 2 fall plots, 95% chance of rain and 3/4 inch predicted this morning when I planted them. Now not so much…. I did manage to throw up 2 more stands so at least that went right.
WW should be fine. Brassica may be a bit late but they should be OK. Good job Adam. This stuff takes time.
