Headed out solo at 2:30 to see if I still have it go find fish on my own. Going to have the mercum set up in the jigging hole and a crappie minnow on a jig with a bobber in the other.
You know the secret to hard water fishing? You got to lay down some chum. Fighting clown whiskey on youtube ice fishing. Have to admire a guy that can drill a hole in the ice wearing clown shoes and boxing gloves.
Hitting south side leech lake rock piles this weekend for big night time walleyes. Try to chase jumbo perch during the day. Focusing on the pin our first night and will go from there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
OK gents, being new to the northern portion of our country this will be my first season on the ice. I will further preface by saying I am a ****ty fisherman....... but I do love to fish. That said, my girl hooked me up with a surprise late xmas gift of a full on ice setup. Sled with 2 man clam style house (Shappell), auger, extra Mr Buddy, etc. She then let me pick out some reels and poles. We got a couple spinning reels and a straight line setup as well. I even grabbed a couple tip ups to play with. The ice in our immediate area is not great at the moment so we are heading north for the weekend to fish. Likely either Lake Mitchell, Cadillac or Missaukee. I have some basic tackle. Moon jigs, spoons, and the like that I would usually use to target pan fish but what else should I be considering? We certainly aren't picky about targeting any particular species. We just want to have some fun together on the ice. Also I have loaded the tip ups with 30lb tip up braid but what should I consider for terminal tackle? Anything aside from the obvious? Leader, swivel, weight and hook? Pointers? Tips? I am all ears.....
Do you have a flasher style depth finder? Best investment an ice fisherman can make. Get a sucker harness for the tip up, the harness is basically 2 treble hooks with a little plastic blade on each treble. Plenty of wax worms.
Navionics. It will show in the app place as Boating marine and lakes. It’s not 100% accurate but it sure is better than nothing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks for the harness tip. Wax worms were already on my list to have as they seem to be the go to here, aside from spikes, most of the time. We spent most of last Saturday researching and looking at depth / fish finders. It was a lot to cipher for someone ignorant to their use like myself. Lots of options, none of which are exactly cheap. So, I have not yet settled on what to purchase in that dept.
Yeah they are spendy My son in law has an old Marcum that is so simple it isn't a flasher just a digital display that marks fish and picks up my jig, check e-bay or craigs for a deal on used.
Taking the wife fishing Friday evening I am taking the day off so I will have the house all set up and warm by the time she gets out there. It is going to be like take a kid fishing I will be putting bait on taking fish off etc. I have to head to the airport Saturday morning so I am sure we will catch a limit of crappies and I will be up late cleaning fish. As much as I dread the idea of heading to Florida I am going to make it fishing at least once, ice fish and kayak fish in the Gulf in 24 hours.
Don't make them anymore but absolutely love my Marcum VX1. Guessing you can find used yet. They either replaced with the M1 or M3, not sure. I'm personally not a huge Vexilar fan but if you go that route, look at the FL18. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
Was bored on my lunch break yesterday so punched some holes in the river. Might need to investigate some more this winter as I've never ice fished the river before. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
I grew up not far from the Mississippi in Monticello, because of the nuke plant the river did not freeze, only during shutdowns. River ice would scare me.
