I’ll be hunting public land this year as well. Last year was my first year hunting public and I really enjoyed hunting new ground and adding the new level of complication to the hunt.
I’ve found some awesome places over the winter and early summer. September cant get here soon enough!

Got one decent buck in the area so far. Still another month to grow! How about how he looks directly at the cam when he just clears that poplar tree? They don't miss a trick!

I will be hunting public land in LA for the early season. I will be moving at the inconvenient time of mid OCT, and starting over in NC. I will probably spend a little time on family land in SC.

    It’s was classified as unscorable.
Several people looked at it but everyone was reserving the final score and review for a gentleman with B&C named Dave Boland. Every year he comes down to the Dixie Deer Classic in Raleigh, NC to score deer.
While he was reviewing it he called several P&Y and NCBA scorers to explain his reasoning.
Basically he was unable to definitively determine the main beams.

Just for fun a gentleman for P&Y scored only the tine length and it grossed 105 5/8”. That score didn’t include main beam length, inside width and 6 of the 8 circumference measurements.

Dave was very gracious and apologized several times but I explained that the score didn’t matter to me, I was just curious how the heck he would do it. And as far as I was concerned it was a buck that could never be one-upped by me.

Who cares if it couldn’t be scored? You definitely killed a once-in-a-lifetime buck.

    That’s exactly how I feel.

For anyone that likes reading hunting stories, it was featured in the August 2018 edition of Rack Magazine.

I'll be on public ground also here in IL. First year in about 10 yrs bowhunting due to work related commitments. About to put boots on the ground soon as squirrel season starts the 1st. Can't wait to do some homework.

Not a bad area. I've scouted a good chunk of it and found evidence of heavy pressure, but you should be good for the early season... The entire east coast should arrive right around the last weekend of October.

I'm only getting one new thing for the bow hunting season, muck boots. I'll be hunting in some swampy areas on the public land to get away from other hunters.

I'll be hunting mainly public ground for the 3rd straight year. Missed a really nice buck on public land last year in late October and haven't thought about bucks since then. This year is going to be a meat year

Went and pulled my camera cards the other day, pretty good results overall. I have quite a few doe on cam & atleast two or three with fawns. A couple small bucks that aren't anything to write home about, some turkey and what I think is a pretty nice bear. I didn't get a great shot of him, but I know nearby homeowners have been complaining about a bear getting into their garbage on a regular basis. They showed me some pics and it seemed to be in the 250 pound range, I can't tell if this is the same one.

A few pics of the current bucks on camera, It looks like I have a small 6, a 4 pointer and a spike. I am hoping something bigger comes along and kicks these guys out of town, but if not I will happily take any one of them that is legal.

On a side note, pretty nice turkey picture and a decent sized gray fox.

I also went and pulled some cards today off of a public piece. Accidentally set the cam to video and had 70 videos of does and fawns walking by, no bucks
