The unexpected sound of chainsaws on the private ground I hunt is pushing me back to the public land I cut my teeth on as a kid. My first sit back there in 8 years yielded passing 5 bucks in the first 2 hours....sitting not 15 yards from (the now dead) tree I shot my first ever buck from 16 years ago. I’ll continue to mix in a few hunts there as the year goes on, but I’ve just scratched the surface on this spot. After blowing my chances on my Kentucky public land hunt last year, it was nice to get back to the battlegrounds up here and see some action from the start. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Back to the public land the next 2 afternoons. Going to try and set up on the edge of some thick fingers that should be loaded with oaks. Taking some of my cheaper cams in with me this time to see if I can get any pics of bucks traveling the area. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Deer camp on a large portion of state land this week. The same land I killed my first deer with a bow 15 years ago. I’ve grown to really learn the land there and have had many opportunities at nice bucks but never seemed to pull the trigger on one. This year I’m gonna lower my standards a little and have fun with it. Really looking forward to this! we do our camp the last week of October before all the hunters roll in for November And take over. It’s really paid off for us in the past. After scouting yesterday for six hours and ungodly miles I’m headed right back the same place as I was in last year and had my chance at a 140” 9 point. Still regret that one. Good luck to everyone! Hunted public on Friday eve/Sat morning. Saw a pile of does and one small buck but nothing too exciting. Sat eve I tried a new public spot I've never been in before. Ended up spending about 3 hours walking around looking at trees and could never find a spot I wanted to hunt. Either bad wind, too thick, no good trees, etc. Ended up getting so frustrated I packed out and left. It wasn't a good night.
Just had a big 8 with a 20 inch spread at 35. Milling around in cover. So close. Like a ghost he appeared. Didn't hear him walking. Right on edge of cover. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I HATE those ninja deer. Squirrels sound like elephants but deer can get right in on ya. Something is wrong with that.
I did this the other night too. Out of the truck at 2, walking to a saddle picked out on the map between 2 long ridges, and back to the truck at 5 with my Lone Wolf never leaving my back. Frustrating indeed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would be interested to hear everyone’s top 5 tips to successful public land hunting... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
1.Learn to use topo/aerial photos 2. Don't be obvious about where you are going. No flags, no tacks, I even park a ways away from where I intend to go in the woods most of the time. 3. Be willing to go where others aren't. In some areas for me that means a mile or more in, or up steep hills, or in the little corner that gets overlooked by the parking area. (Seriously, one of my best spots for does and mature bucks, I'm never more than 150 yards from a road.) 4. Be mobile. I rarely hunt the same spot twice. Maybe I should, but I dont. 5. Be courteous to other hunters. May not lead to success, but leads to not being a sorry son of a.... 6. In early out late. Most hunters are back at the truck by 930-10. Stay in the stand later, and get in earlier for a evening hunt. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
All this Public Land Hunting has/had me intrigued so with the Telephone Company coming through my lease last week and bull dozering right through the middle and installing new poles I decided to come out to a spot 35mins from my House and give it a shot. All settled in for a evening hunt.... a opening about 3/4 a mile in and a bit of CRP in the middle of it... let’s see what happens tonight. Just a bit of info came and scouted Sunday w/Wife and kids and directly across the piece is a 1 man ladder stand so basically with the Topographic Map and seeing it I figured a good place to start.. though I figure it’s a Gun Stand.
