I drew a doe antelope tag for the plateau. Early season. Tempted to find a water hole and take the bow instead of a rifle.

Filled my doe tag. I was hoping the antelope would be a bit more laid back this early. Pretty much nope on that. The bucks weren't nearly as flighty as the does. I had to sneak in to get a 630 yard shot on this one.

I used my husband's 338 lapua because I could dial in that range. With my usual hunting rifle it would be much more like guessing than I'd like. :)[IMG][IMG]

The canyon is called Pole Canyon. We glassed the antelope from the road, right by the cattle guard. They were on the on the other side of the canyon. There isn't a road on top of that side of the canyon so I think that's why they felt safe bedding there. There is a 4x4 trail in the bottom of the canyon for a bit, but you wouldn't be able to see them from the bottom.

We saw a bunch of bucks from smooth knoll. In fact we spotted a herd of antelope from the top of the knoll, at least a mile away and started after them. We used the lower areas to get inside 700 yards but we couldn't get closer.

I set up the rifle and waited for them to get up. It felt like five hours but was about an hour. There were ten or twelve antelope in that group and every one was a buck. Lol

I also repeatedly saw two nice bucks running together over by Bald Knoll. (Northeast side mostly)

If you glass from Smooth Knoll, to there's a waterhole to the northwest, (Mitt's Reservoir) that a bunch of antelope were using midday. There's another, closer waterhole to the southwest (smooth knoll reservoir) that the antelope used, but they ran in and ran out, vs hanging out at the other one.

Some friends of our got into a bunch of 'lopes over by Pollywog.

So, that was long. Sorry. But if you have any other questions, I'll try to help.

    Good luck!

Thanks Christine. I need all the help I can get. I changed jobs the first of June and We moved last week and I have the archery hunt coming in 2 weeks. I have only been down there once this year. I do have family down there so that will help. This summer was a lot busier then I thought it would be.

Christine After chasing elk last Friday. My and his family and me and my wife shot down to Parker Mountain for the weekend. saw a lot of Antelope. there are very skittish down there. We would be half a mile away and they would run off. It is going to be a challenging hunt for this old bow hunter.
    Thanks for your help

You have any luck with the elk? I got lucky on the 5th.

My first archery elk. She dropped 27 yards from my stand.

Good luck with the speed goats!![IMG][IMG]

Way to go:nana:. I could never close the gap with a shooter. Played with the big bulls a couple times. My son got his first Elk with a bow a week ago Friday and that was really cool.
