My brother and I ended up going out today. Combined: 2 gadwall, 3 green wing teal, 5 spoonbill, 2 pintail Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I'm hoping for some cold weather up north across the border to push them down. We had a real nice first wave, but no new birds for about a month.
I probably shoot 2x more shells shooting sea ducks on the water than I do in the air. As soon as they hit the water if they’re still up you have to hit them again or good chance you’ll lose them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
4 Brant, a Honker, and a Hen Green Wing Teal...had some good missed opportunities because we weren't paying attention which is still really bothering me! Should have had a couple Mallards, Black ducks, and Pintails, but hey when your not paying attention you can't blame anyone but yourself! haha
It’s been pretty slow around here. It should get really good this weekend. Big fronts are coming in the next 5 days. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I work with 18 decoys. Mallards, mostly hens. They're old and lost their color. I'm hunting all divers and brant. I was thinking of painting some white spots on half of them. Thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Worth a shot. I know old timers that use to spray paint soda bottles black and white and throw them on a long line and kill piles of Old Squaw and Surf Scoters. This was a long time ago, but hey it worked for them.
Finally got time to hunt. First time out this season. Been off work since Friday and only made it out once so far. Going to float hunt the local creek here tomorrow. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I’m really bumming about the waterfowl situation here in southern Illinois. Used to be dynamite but it’s so hit and miss anymore. The states broke and the weather doesn’t push them down like it used to. Don’t get me wrong you can get some good shooting in on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers but I think I’m ready for a change of scenery anyway. So my real question is does anyone have suggestions for some good duck hunting and reputable outfitters? I’m looking into North and South Dakota and Kansas also but I’m open for any suggestions. Mallards and pintails are my target species but like I said I’m all ears. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
+1 for this as well, would love to travel next year for some hunts and to get out of NY! Kansas was one of the states I had in mind as well.
It was a decent float this morning. Lots of mallards. Lost 3 birds. Only floated about 4 miles of creek. Ended up with 2 hooded magansers and 1 drake mallard. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
My buddy and I did ok Wednesday. We came back with 3 gadwalls, 1 green wing teal, and 1 spoonbill Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
We have a refuge up where I live that when I was in high school was awesome for honkers. Now with the weather pushing them down later and it being a shallow lake and freezing up early usually right the before big push happens. There just isn’t enough birds to keep it open. Hunt down by the big lake last weekend had about 1,000,000 birds fly either 1 mile west or a mile east of us. We were set up in corn but it has been to a warm and they haven’t been hitting it like usual. Unless your hunting around the big lake in ND it can be pretty hit or miss depending on the migration but you will see birds everywhere if you follow the river up to the lake at all times of the year. For closing there aren’t a lot of outfitters in ND, kinda frowned upon, but you won’t be hard pressed to get into bird and depending on land owner to get permission. Also, in ND if there isn’t a posted sign it’s fair game to hunt. And if your after ducks early season on the prairie pothole region is tough to beat. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
My wife is slapping me down. I think she's had it with my hunting lol. My brother is gonna try a new area tomorrow and I'm not allowed to go out tomorrow. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
If your looking for an outfitted hunt I would go to Saskatchewan or Alberta. Bigger and less restrictive bag limits up north. ND is great for freelancing, lots of mixed bag hunting on the potholes as well as opportunities for swans and cranes. Hunting for pheasants and sharp tail grouse is a nice way to throw some variety into it to. I have hunted Kansas as well but was buddy guided. It was fantastic. Missouri is also worth a look.
