You sound like my wife. A flight is a flight. Points will pay the way. About the only perk left of travel is having airline status and a big ol bank of points.
Hello all. I'm looking forward to the hunt.. Only two weeks away! Just had a question. For those of you who have hunted near this camp before, is there any cell phone reception?
Trust me, there is plenty of excitement. I'm spending at least two hours a day on the phone with people- all in "what do I bring" prep mode. I am estimating somewhere between 20-25 hunters (that has been par for this course). I will buy food and water accordingly. if we run out, we'll go and get more (adapt and overcome). I am heading back up this weekend for three more days of scouting-turning adventure in discovery. So far, I am liking the two new areas I have found. I'd like to turn the two into twenty! This area is so vast, it's hard to cover it all.... I'll have more info for ya'll on Monday night.
Plenty of excitement here too...I've already got some text this morning from some guys with the 2 weeks countdown! PeterC - I just think this forum is not the preferred method of communication like it was in previous years (many prefer text and Facebook now)...but still a great place to reach & welcome newcomers. Forecast still looks decent - and actually I'd be excited if it said 100 degrees or 0 degrees...I just love being in the elk mountains. Good Luck this weekend Will!
Guaranteed archery bull tag for my unit takes 6-7 points. And my unit is one of the easier units to draw. Then if I pull a tag, I have to wait 5 years before I can apply again. Too many hunters, not enough elk. The DWR can't let the elk numbers get too high because the elk all want to spend their winters down in the valleys where they cause a lot of trouble.
Explaining the draw system and units out here is kind of tough. Some units you need 10-15 points to draw an archery bull tag. Rifle can take over 20 years! Those are the units with nearly 100% success on bulls 300" or better. But half the tags are given out randomly, which means some people draw with no points or very few points. There are a few also 'any bull' units. I could take my OTC archery tag and kill any bull (or cow) I wanted on those units. Tough hunting tho'. If I headed west about 3 miles I'd be in such a unit. So way I don't I hunt over there? Very tough terrain and far fewer elk. I bought a horse just so I could scout over there but he unexpectedly dropped dead in May. So maybe next year....
I'm trying to figure out what I want to do for sure this year. I have been asked to go back with the guys I went with last year for rifle in October, as well as have an invite to go to Washington for a salmon fishing trip which I have never done, or go to Huck's camp. A lot of things come into play for me as I have a family now as well as work and customer cattle that I may need to be shipping out, not sure on dates yet. (excuses, excuses) Huck's camp is by far one of the best and if you get the chance or have the want you should attend it is a great time and good way to get your feet wet archery elk hunting without dumping a bundle of cash on a guided hunt or going at it alone trying to figure it out.
Sounds like a good time either way! I'm really hoping that Dave and I can make an appearance. If we are on elk we aren't leaving lol. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Here's video of that little bull that walked by me the other day. I was watching over a water hole. No wallowing yet. And hardly any cows. Or spikes. Four different little bulls tho'. :/ In a few years when I draw my tag they should be all growed up. :D
6 more days for me! Good luck to all going ! Is there an exact coradance to ya'll camp? Just wondering how far away you guys are .
