I'll be giving waterfowl hunting a go for the first time this year. My dad went to the blind drawing at Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area like he does every year (never gets drawn), and this year he was actually drawn 4th or 5th pick. Last year the blind he selected harvested just under 300 birds. I'll have a hard time balancing my time if it is as addicting as you're all saying. I've got a German Wirehair Pointer pup that will be just shy of a year old come pheasant season and I really need to spend as much time in the field as I can with her pheasant hunting. We'll see how it goes!
Don't do it! You're about to start a life long addiction lol. My dad first took me at age 5. 26 years later its still all I think about hunting wise! Nothing like it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Its a competition thing from both other hunters and birds. Bigger usually wins. If you've got a refuge with 50,000 and the guy next to you is running 400 and 20 spinners you're going to struggle with 2 dz.
I will be running around 3 and a half doz duck decoys this year. Mostly mallards with some black ducks and pintails for visibility.
That's what we deal with on the Mississippi and migrators. I was hoping I didn't give that impression that I was one of "those guys" that think bigger spreads are always better. some of my best hunts were over a dozen. If you are where they want to be anyway you don't need much. not even your calls.
Found a winter wheat field this morning with about 40 in it. Not much at all for geese around here yet.
Pumped for tomorrow's early goose opener!!! Anyone else going out in the am? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Looks promising; good luck! We don't open until the 3rd. I've been watching a field for a week now that has about 60 birds in it but I can't get ahold of the farmer over the phone and he's never home when I stop. Picture perfect field conditions and locations and the birds come in in small groups which doesn't happen very often here. Typically they come all at once or not at all. Talked to a large cattle guy near my place that has about 2000 acres of silage/earlage and I've got sole permission on that again this year so hopefully birds start showing up.
Ended up getting permission for the first field I was talking about. This morning there were multiple small groups flying into the field. Also checked the first silage of the cattle farmer and there were 2 dozen flying in when I was leaving. I hate getting my hopes up like this! Hope you're getting into them this morning Vermontster and anyone else that may be out hunting!
I had to work (go figure) - so my husband went out. They didn't have much luck. Got one bird out of a group of 4. Had a large flock that wouldn't come in and then a small group of 3. Guy that was with them sky blasted, so they were only able to get 1. Told him we need to get our own group and decoys to go hunting - that happens too much with them. But, doves look promising - went home at lunch to let my horses out and had three sitting on the barn roof.
Teal opens here next Saturday. Dove opened this morning. Heck of a way to kick off 2016 Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Waiting on the gang to show up so we can bust up a few big honkers on the river. Father went out this morning with 2 other guys and shot 7. 2 birds were banded locally Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
He had a blast. Been asking every morning for a week if it was dove season yet. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
