I just started using one last year... I will never go without one again. Can't go wrong with a strike master (granted I would go with the 8").

Really can't go wrong with most augers I don't think. Like anything will a small motor, take care of them and they'll last. I use a hand auger for early portable ice because I like to be light. My brother in law has a propane jiffy which is great and we use an electric ion the most which is my favorite. Just need to keep the battery warm.

Flashers, if you're looking to get one, look at the Marcum vx1. I've had mine for quite a few years now and zero problems. It's got the same features that you would have to go all the way to a Vexilar Fl18 at a fraction of the price.

Man, I just put a boat back in to go check a few trail cams yesterday. Seems like the ice will never come this year! Lake is wide open but our outlet had nearly 3" that I had to break through. We've had 3-4 days of rain here so most of our snow is gone. Got a dusting last night. I really hope we get the snow next week before ice, then the bottom falls out and we start with a good ice foundation.

How do you guys go about fishing new lakes? What do you look for on maps and the flasher once on the ice?

Start in areas where there are depth/depth changes that I like and then try to find the transition line of weeds/no weeds.

Careful with the phone if you drop it, it will surely bounce and end up falling down the hole.;)

I agree! My portable pictures will have some fish, my permanent pictures will have lots of empty beer cans!

Got the jigs in that I bought on Black Friday. Can't wait to try them out. What are some of the go to stuff you guys use?

I don't have a picture but one of my favorite crappie lure was a gold hook with a larger eye hole on it and it had two little spinner blades on the eye. That with a fathead

Yeah it's going to be around 20 degrees early next week here too. Looks like it will finally stay down.

It's so unpredictable in New England when we'll have ice. Could be in two weeks, could be in a month and a half.
I remember many years being able to ice fish on Christmas Eve, at my parents house where I grew up.

I've never really got into jigging or using a pole. We just usually set up 5-8 tip-ups per man, fire up the propane stove and eat all day.

If you guys are getting the itch and want something to kill some time on your phone, download ice fishing derby. Kind of addicting.
