You know if you get a cow only tag, all you will see is 300"+ bulls. they will be standing there at 10 yds mocking you.

    Chop,

    Priorities my man priorities.

Swing what you can. But don't miss out on a once in a life time hunt.

This^^^^^ Don't spend more than you are willing to. If a cow makes you happy get a cow tag. I got the either sex tag so I can shoot the 1st legal animal that comes by!

Chop I'm not even buying a elk tag when I get there. I got my deer tag so I'm going to ride that for a couple days see how it goes. Will I be bummed out if that 300" steps out on Sunday? Sure will. But if I tag out on my deer tag within the first few days, I'll call my wife, get permission ( :) ) and get an elk tag.

    That is a legal bull!

    Put 2016 on the calendar...

Waid, still one of the best stories from unit 45...

Also - how in the hell does your bull keep getting bigger?

    You anywhere close Fitz?

Will - you've done gone and stirred up 113 pages of excitement already on this thread...nicely done!

Dan - love that you are already planning to come back...lol

    Drive Safe!

I can't help but crack a smirk every time I say "hoochie mamma" :)

Based on my encounters...cow much harder to get than a bull, I'd be scared to have a cow only tag in my pocket...

    Sounds like a plan...

I got all wound up checking this thread earlier - so I just went for a 5 mile jog - beautiful night, full moon and broken clouds...I'm ready to get after some elk!

When it comes to archery elk hunting, Mr. Murphy is always present. Last year I opted to concentrate on mule deer during the archery season. The plan was to hunt and collect a nice muley buck, something which has eluded me the last few years. I had out of towners coming to hunt elk during one of Colorado's rifle season. I decided to hunt elk with them. I knew right away (when I hit the submit button for the application) I would regret this decision. Sure enough, I stalked within 40 yards of two 6x6 bulls splashing and playing in a small bog. Either would have been a chip shot. I watched them for 20 minutes-kicking myself the entire time! I saw nothing during the rifle season (although I tracked and chased a bull to one of the out of towners).

I still believe any elk with a bow is a trophy. Like Matt said, cows can sometimes be harder to arrow than bulls (in many case you have more to overcome-more noses, more eyes, more ears, etc.) I hold absolutely zero disrespect for anyone who has closed the gap and arrowed an elk. It's a feat worthy of really good dumb luck or true champion hunters...

Stay positive and be there to do it!

Matt, if I could figure out how to post a link to that story from my phone, I would. I think it's a good read for the folks coming to elk camp and the mountains for the first time.

Sometimes I look at that bull and think he grows a little bit also. Occasionally, I'll be watching tv and I'll catch him looking at me all ticked off. He's still upset I ruined his date he had planned that night. I don't know why he's still so upset. I gave him plenty of time to get away...

I'll be buying my elk tag when we get in Colorado. Can I buy it at a Walmart?

Just checking, I had read something that after the season opened you had to buy from a parks office. That was heavily debated on a couple of forums, with some saying you could buy at vendors at anytime. I have my hunter safety card in my wallet now, so I'm ready. :)

I can't grow a beard. But I've got a weeks worth of fuzz I don't plan on shaving. It's going to be disgusting.

I did a trial run of about 4 days worth a couple of weeks back. It came in white, grey and just a touch of brown and red. One of my customers told me it looked like I was wearing a calico cat on my face :(
