Random: I looked at my antelope tag and season is August 15th through September 20th so I'm headed out this weekend to hang some cameras over some water tanks.
Archery only. Thought it ended the end of August but checked my tag and a lot more time. Sent from my C811 4G using Tapatalk
Heard an update from a group on the west side of CO. 1 cow down already, and the elk are getting after it. Somehow these boys are nearly 100% success rate in 4 years. I can't say in words how badly I wish I could of made it to the camp in a few weeks. Shooting for '16 now I guess!
Ive seen lots of Mule deer each time I've been out, that ain't counting the Monster I saw in 2010. I've always gone for Elk only, that way I don't get sidelined from the mission ahead, but when I do see a Mule deer I try to get a picture or two and mark it on my GPS. 2010 Myself and Mark got into a group of around 20 Mule deer, all in tradition archery range! Matt: I'm taking a Tarp, Bivvy bag and overnight gear, so if you fancy a good walk in and sleep over..... I'm up for that!
So I am very new at hunting with a bow and elk for that matter. Just want to know if there are some experienced people that would be willing to take a newb like myself with them? Or even anyone willing to team up. The comfort of having another there is a plus. Talking strategy and stalking would help. Hey I seen an elk one time I know what to look for now lol. Biggest question of all I guess is getting it back to camp? Like I said NEWB
Heard reports today from a father son at church that just got back from Colorado. Bulls are not bugling whatsoever. They said they believe they went out too early. Looks like you guys planned this right!
Definitely not bugling... wifi in Minturn...just down the road for those who need to work. I had one Verizon dot on my phone (1X) in camp and four dots a mile up no name road. Troy from Oz has passed on four mulies already. He and I were glassing a small bull on the north side of the homestake road. Rex saw a huge bull with a number of cows and six deer in the campsite when he arrived. Bears are down low since the berry crop up high failed. A good portion of the camp was erected this weekend. I'll be back up to finish next weeekend. Here's my thoughts. "Expect" nothing. As Matt says, elk are hard to kill with a bow. Come with the smile, stay positive, and turn this into an amazing learning experience. Treat an elk as icing on the cake. Attitude at altitude is everything! When you give up, you might as well go home...you will be too reluctant to keep looking, and your mood will pull everone else down. You have to be ready! When it happens and an elk is upon you, you'll have seconds to make it happen. I would pass on frontal shots...out of respect for an amazing creature. There's simply too much which can go wrong. I was out for less than three hours (two quick hunts after setting up camp) and saw a total of six deer. Troy passed on a skinny doe on his very first hunt...a mere two minutes from launching out of the truck. We were getting afternoon rain showers...temps at night dropped down to mid 30's. Had a lot of firsts on my hunt for Coues deer in Arizona, actually saw one and had a 40 yard shot. I missed. I was stung by a scorpian on the finger! Got to kill that bad boy and add another close call to the resume. The trip was a great warm up for the elk camp! I'll try to catch up every night-help with answers. Keep asking! We're close!
A week in the mountains away from life will do me good. My only expectation for this trip is to have a blast and meet a bunch of guys! I know I'll learn a ton.
Man that has me so excited! Also really happy that I got a deer tag! I'm going in looking to have a great time away from real life and just unwind. If I manage to tag a beautiful animal, then that is just an added bonus! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Well guys, just got back to my dads house. Its been a fun week in the mountains. Opening morning started off with a bang. Woke up got out of the tent and had three differnt bulls screaming there heads off. We got the win right and went after one of them. We got into 100 yards and dad hit the call. He came straight into me at 50 yards! This dude was a monster (dad has a 250 on his wall and he dwarfed him). He came straight in a stopped behind a spruce tree. As bad as I wanted to try an punch an arrow through I did not try it. Once he figured out there was no cow he meandered off. They continued to scream for most of opening day then shut up. Fast foward to thursday we were on several bulls the days before but nothing solid. Thursday my dad and I were still hunting trying to find sign (I was a good 30 yards in front of dad) I snuck up on another monster dad accidentally hit his foot on a log and the bull busted out on us. I was so frustrated I was sick. He hit the cow call and that thing came back on a string! The only problem with that was I was pissed off and facing the other way. That bull walked up to 40 yards all the time dad is stuck behind a spruce trying to get my attention so I could shoot. Made me feel even worse when I turned around and seen him bust off. That was my last opportunity at anything. I hate going home empty handed but it was a great week none the less. We got to lay in the tent last night an listen to them bugle all night long. We ended up seeing several bear one pushing 400lbs. He was huge. We also seen a massive moose. People at camp thought we were crazy saying he was at least 40 inches wide until the warden came in the next day confirming there were several in the area bigger than that. Great week chasing bulls and being in the rockies. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
If I can swing it at work I sure will. I know more when I go back in a few days. I was oh so close two times to having my monster bull. Getting that close just fuels the fire even more. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
I can only imagine! I wamt just one of those encounters! The elk would be a bonus. These 12 days can't go by any faster!
I've killed elk. The big bull just eludes me. Thought for sure twice I had him. I know the feeling. I wait 11 1/2 months every year as soon as I leave. There no place like those mountains. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
Going to try my best. I don't like that 611$ tag soup. Christine-this was a slow week for the most part. But those two big bulls that close with the one screaming in my face definitely made the trip. If only what could have been.... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
