I come up with 35. Grant it many of those are self sufficient yet will be part of camp. Some guys will be there as early as later this week. Most will show up around the 20th. Some will be locals that only hunt weekends and there will be couple that can only make the last 4 days or so. Plus you never know who just might show up. So our numbers will vary throught out camp.
I was thinking it would be close to that number - it's kind of like Field of Dreams...if Will builds it, they will come. It is going to be one heck of an elk camp!
You can start walking from camp if you want - and some have. But typically vehicles head out anywhere from 5 to even 15/20 miles from camp to get to their destination. That is why it does not matter how big camp would get - there is SO much room...it almost blows your mind when you are used to hunting 20-30 acre woodlots for whitetails...
Subscribed to this thread and sent Will a PM....if I can scrape the pennies between now and 2016....this is a must be done kinda thing.
Book it! Tag and gas are the expenses...rest can be done VERY cheap with Will's gracious offer to stay in his camp...although many can't resist the urge to upgrade all kinds of gear
Do most guys have a gps with. How is the phone reception for Verizon on the mountain. I have a gps but it doesn't have a topo map on it but as long as I can find my way back to camp and mark some waterholes I think I'll be good
That is the unbelievable part! I have never even seen an Elk in the wild yet....let alone know how to call one properly or begin to 1/4 one should the Lord bless me, but this is a chance in a lifetime I don't think I'll be able to pass up.
Dave - one thing I've learned is you find elk where they are. Each year has been a different spot that I have gotten into them, kind of expecting some of the same this year. If you are asking if I'm going back to where I got mine last year - yeah, I sure hope to get to that spot once just to relive the memory...but won't waste much time there if the sign is not fresh. The only thing I've figured out so far is that miles = encounters...not sure there will ever be that one sweet spot...those elk cover ground in a hurry.
I believe I warned all the Newb's...because I had fair warning also (and didn't think it was possible)...but be prepared for this to be just the first of many elk camps...
