I wasn't too high on a sheep hunt until I got into their country. Just spending time up there chasing them would be awesome, regardless of the outcome. I either need to move, find a kick a$$ job, or start applying for preference points for it to happen though.
I couldn't agree more. 5 years ago I'd have told you I'd never hunt for one. Now they are a top 3 hunt for me. As for planning ahead to make it happen... I realized I had the same 3 options so I'm doing all 3! Haha been playing the points game for 6 years now, graduate pharmacy school in May, and have 4 job interviews lined up in Alaska the first week in September. I leave for Wyoming in 21 hrs now! Looks like rain may wash us away this first weekend making waterhole hunting useless, but I much prefer spot/stalk anyway so we will see how it goes.
Good luck Trevor! I might do some pronghorn control this weekend. If i do, it will be spot and stalk..... with a .300 win mag or .338 lapua. :D
I second the sheep hunting ad top of the list. Elk hunting wasn't on my radar for the immediate future until I saw this post. On a side note, has anyone applied for just a general preference point for sheep in Wyoming? If so what is a good area to start building points for?
Wyoming points are $125 per year and you are decades from drawing (if ever).... That's the last place id start building. CO is much more economical. You have to front $2k up front for the tag but you are refunded all but like $13 when you don't draw. It takes 3 years before being considered so just pick any random unit and compile research over the next 3 years to know which unit fits you best. I've known people to draw on the 3rd year, as well as people 20+ years in who still haven't. AZ is only $15 if you are already building points for elk/deer ( must first have hunting license there every year)... But you'll probably never pull a tag. ID is a crap shoot with no point system but odds are the same for everyone at least. Same with NM. MT is reasonably priced to build points. Odds are pretty astronomical too (basically every state is). I'm not sure on the states farther west than these as I haven't researched them yet. If you want the sheep hunting experience without waiting 20+ years, apply for a ewe tag and go in a few years! I probably will take that approach for Montana.
Man those pictures are awesome. I'm getting excited! 4 weeks from today I will be loading down the SUV! That means I really need to get my butt in gear now! We are moving this weekend and that has been taking up a lot of my time. I still need to get by the archery shop and get my arrow order put in because i know he is probably backing up at this point. Still have a few important things i need to order (gps, rain gear) but I'm trying to wait until we move first and make sure we don't have any surprises. I did decide that I am going to go ahead and bring my own tent. It's not that I don't like yall but I don't want to get kicked out after the 2nd night due to snoring
Pat hope the move goes well with no surprises. You could always bring your tent but not set it up the first night or two and see how it goes. Thats what I do. What type of tent do you have?
The next month is going to drag on. This time of year I'm usually thinking about Labor Day weekend plans, dove hunting and getting ready for deer season. This year, the only thing on my mind is elk. Can't wait to see the mountains and hear that first bugle.
We finally had some rain this year and the doves are flying around like crazy. More than I've seen in a lot of years. This will be the first opening day I miss since I was probably 12. But the next weekend I will make up for it.
I'm not much of a wing shooter. Hell of a shot just don't go much. I do miss opening day of dove season though. I've missed the past 3 due to pharmacy school obligations and will be gone for this one as well. Should be a great day, 1st falling on Labor Day Monday when everyone is off. Plenty of guns should be barking everywhere keeping em flying
100+ degree heat index here today...some 20-30 degree nights sound fantastic! Temps at camp have been running below average all summer...makes me think we won't see any of the upper extremes like 80 while we are there...but you never know...60's and 40's right now for high/low...
I hope it stays that way. The cooler weather will keep them up and moving and not just feeding at night and holding in the dark timber sleeping during the day. Will make for cooler nights but that can be dealt with.
Talked to the wife and she is all about me going to elk hunt with y'all. I'll be back in the beginning of sep so practice and refit archery supplies and I'll see you up there
