If anyone lives in the area of Elizabeth and wants to shoot somewhere let me know. I am new at this and could use the help. I could also use some info on what to bring with. I have never done anything like this.

    Master,

If you plan on coming to camp let me know and I'll add you to the list. As far as what to bring look through this thread. Basically sleeping bag, gps, bow, arrows, release, $100 for Will for food, cot, and radio if you have one. PM if you have any questions

I've read pages 77 thru 81, I think the best option is what Matt said. Buy your tags and pick them up at a licensing agent when you get here (like Basspro).

Everything is still on target. I will set up camp on Sept 6th, and use it on the weekends until everyone arrives. If you come early, it'll be ready to go. Rex is bring his trailer and will be the camp tender during the week-along with the Australians. The place ill be jumping on the 20th!

Colby, I picked up a bear tag too!

Have fun! And have that camera ready...
Both of those areas should be great scenery, and good training for elk camp...there are many trips worth of great hikes just in the Holy Cross Wilderness.

Yes sir. There is a rideline off half moon pass (tigiwon road) that heads east of the trails that we found in 2012 and was a great place to watch elk and isn't too far a hike. We will take lots of pictures I promised the wife I would get her a new lens for her camera.

What does a typcial hunt resemble?

Maybe hike to a point and spot and stalk?

    Usually paired up?

Early in the mornings the elk will usually bugle a time or two. They spend the evenings in the meadows and clearings feeding then go into the timber during the day and usually stay in the shade. In the evenings they come out and feed again. So early in the mornings try to intercept them or call one to you. During the day hunt the timber to try to catch them sleeping or stretching out or at a wallow. Evenings try to intercept them going to feeding. Its a big crap shoot though cause weather, pressure, and other factors play into their movements too.

You can hunt them how you want either with a small group, a pair, alone, split a small group stalking through timber during the day. Set up on water whatever floats your boat. Find some elk try to work in on them with out busting them out of the country and try to put one down if not repeat until you figure out how to hunt them.

Dan, if you are a confident caller and have been practicing, then go for it. If you're not a confident caller, then stick to cow calling with a HOOCHIE MAMA by Primos, they are an easy call to use and sound good too. I'm gonna be bugling and cow calling, cuz I can and I practice regular :)

So the previous 2 months ive been spending like crazy. Now I want to cheap out, and not spend so much. So my question, will wearing the military BDU/Multicam be fine as long as I have good base layers? Im guessing the answer is yes..I just feel like getting confirmation.

Also, a field dressing bag or whatever, where should I go find one? (surgical glove, scissors and the like?)

I think the BDU's will be fine. I'm sure there will be alot of us wearing cotton clothes.

Any camo will work - the majority of time I shed my camo top and have on a solid black, green, or gray base layer as I'm always hot when hiking the mountains. My only focus with clothes is staying dry, both dry from rain, and dry from sweat.

For field dressing - I have some Remington game bags I pick up when I get my tags at Walmart (Will and others suggest even using old pillow cases) and then you need a knife & sharpener, or two knives (or Havalon). I have a small two knife set I used last year and small sharpener, I was surprised how much we needed to sharpen during skinning/deboning - Knives were free from RMEF so not sure how good of quality the metal is...

I prefer to debone to save weight and less to deal with at camp, but if pack out is not too far from road...you can quarter an elk and be ready to go in 10 minutes like Fred Eichler - see video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4kJIrW1IDM
