Still working my way through this thread. Dan I am almost 90% positive you can shoot 40's from that 10mm barrel. I would research it a little more. The 40 is just a little shorter cartridge, doesn't work the other way though. You can't run 10mm in your .40.

They are raised for people to come out and enjoy looking at them.

You do not have to have a GPS but I do recommend it. Its very easy to get lost in the mountains especially at night. At least have a compass and know how to get back to a road or vehicle. If you have a smart phone you can get app's like my tracks or track back or whatever its called and it will help

I highly recommend GPS for anyone that is not familiar with this unit. Yes, you can get by without one as you can typically walk downhill a mile or two and hit a road or stream...but not worth it in my opinion. Even if you don't really use it for marking spots, wallows, etc...just to mark the vehicle or meeting point each day could save hours of tracking off course, especially once its dark or if you'd happen to have head down tracking elk and lose some sense of direction.

I bought a used one off Ebay at Will's suggestion my first year - I got a couple good years out of it:
Bought one just like this: Magellan GPS 315 Handheld GPS Receiver 763357101522 | eBay

I have now upgraded to a Garmin Etrex 20...but they have the very capable Etrex 10 going used for $50-60 at times...such as this one: Garmin eTrex 10 Handheld GPS Receiver | eBay

For me - the GPS gave me confidence to get farther away from roads and know I could still come back out right at the vehicle. The elevation reading is probably what I used most to make sure I wasn't dropping too far down the mountain - nobody wants to walk uphill at the end of a long day:)

Guys, please be aware that using just a compass may be a problem. The unit we are hunting has a lot of iron in the rock and plays hell with the compass needle and you can get lost ........ I know, cuz it happened to me in 2008..... ask Will :( :) . It earned me the camp name of RadioBoy!

Has anyone used the Cabelas MT050 Gore-Tex Rain gear? The jacket and pants both fold up into their own little carry pocket which makes them really easy to transport. I hadn't looked really hard at rain gear yet but this past weekend on our hog hung, i got stuck out in an hour long down pour and i was pretty dang miserable lol.

My wife is quite the sneak. Recently she pulled the your going elk hunting so I want new carpet and paint in the living room and hallway card. She won. New carpet gets put in Wednesday and we are frantically working on paint and going to be putting new trim up all throughout.

Since we are doing all that I figured might as well put tile in the 7 ft × 4 ft area by the front door. So I'm heading to menards to pick that up. Lucky me.

You guys all subscribe to this quarterly magazine? It's fantastic and cool site with lots of info as well. These are the only magazines I save and re-read. and cool site.

If you feel like it mention my name. They sent out something a few weeks ago about giving me an extra magazine if anyone mentions hearing about the site from me. Either way, great mags. I'm others will back me up on that.

Yep! She stuck it to me.... Knew I wouldn't get this trip in that easy. And I just bought her a 2010 chevy traverse. I think I might be set for a few years worth of elk hunting and possibly a bear hunt.

Quit making payments on that truck and you'll have funds for a bear hunt. Either that or move out of Iowa! Man when I think of Iowa, I envision a house, on a cornfield. That is all. Pretty close minded, but I also hear you guys get some terrible weather, id rather not move there.

I will crash in your winters, I saw some of those pictures. Iowa, man, the image of my head of the united states makes Iowa and Indiana, and Illinois a black hole I dont want to visit. = ) No offense, im sure it's nice, but i'd never road trip. I would however go if I got a free trip there!

Off topic, I bought my Marine ILBE off Ebay, $53+$20 shipping I think it said excellent condition. Im debating this first lite, I got it out of one wash yesterday and going to see if it is itchy. If it is, ill buy some UA or just use cotton. Ill be ordering my sleeping bag and sitka gear here shortly. All that is left is GPS.

Anyone want to buy a brand new GoPro Black Edition 3+ from me? My dad sent it to me, but I just don't do extreme sports. Some people get enjoyment out of videotaping their escapades, but not me. Im sticking to a camera.

Hey Guys/Gals sorry I've been MIA for the last couple months on here!!! Was really excited to go on my first Elk but My wife and I have had a bad couple months!!! We recently lost her brother/my best friend in an oil field accident. Never think something this tragic will happen this close to you but it does. I'm hoping the next Elk camp I'll be able to make it!!! Sounds like it's a blast and a great experience with a lot of awesome ppl. I'll still follow this thread and hope to hear about everyone's success and experiences!!!
